it's great for us...but really should the NFL commissioner be involved where player movement?  i know it's a special circumstance, but still, either vick was eligible to come back or not, and if he was then he should have been able to pick any team he wanted and it was up to him to sink or swim

In a case like this, yes he should.  The general public was outraged by what Vick did, and rightfully so.  So when the NFL decided to let him back in the league, the Commish absolutely needed to make sure that Vick was going to a franchise with stability and a strong coaching staff.  The last thing the league needed was to see him go to Cinci where half of the roster shows up on the daily police blotter.  It was really a decision with everyone's best interest in mind.  If Vick comes back and is successful and stays on the straight and narrow, it's good for the league, the Eagles and Vick.  Win all around really.

there arent too many things more agregious than a comissioner dictating where talent goes....basically at that point the league loses all credibility and competitive balance

if im cincy or buffalo i am incensed right now and would bring some sort of lawsuit against the commish office

its a complete disgrace

you are that worried about the guy dont let him back in the league...but to orchestrate where talent goes is so wrong and on par with refs fixing games
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

Persuading someone is way different than dictating. Anyone could gave easily persuaded him by saying "you realize buffalo & cincy are the laughingstock of the league and are complete failures as franchises. You want to start for these teams?"

He also signed a 2 year deal knowing full well that he would have his chance to clean up his image while getting back into the swing of things.

QuoteMichael Vick statement on GQ story:

"I felt it was necessary to put out a statement today clarifying the article in GQ Magazine. I did speak with many people, but the decision to sign in Philadelphia was based on my discussions with my agent, my family and with Coach Reid. And after those discussions, it became clear to me that this was the place I wanted to play and resume my NFL career. The Commissioner never told me to sign or not sign with particular teams. Again, I want to make it perfectly clear that this was a decision I made and, as I have said numerous times before, I'm very happy with the way it has worked out for me and my family."

I'm surprised no one has commented on this yet.

Quote"In the NFL, schemes make great quarterbacks," he added in the ESPN The Magazine interview. "I love Atlanta, but I wish now I would have been drafted by the Eagles."

I usually take things athletes say with a grain of salt when it comes to their "love" for the city/team they play for.  They're pretty much just yacking it up for the fans and saying nice things about the people who hand out the paychecks.  But I don't think I've ever heard an athlete go so far as to say that he wished he'd been drafted by X team and played his entire career there.  Maybe he's still just playing to the home crowd and just took it to another level, but damn if I didn't leak some pecker snot while reading that.

anyone could but the comissioner of the league should never give his two cents on where a player goes...first of all what do you think a player...especially a player in vicks psoition at the time is going to do when the guy who ultimately controls his life gives him a push in a certain direction

its just compeltely out of bounds....goodells involvement begins and ends with whether vick should be allowed back in the league and what he must do behavoir wise to remain in the league

It looks to me like that writer took some liberties with his quotes.  No where does Vick specifically say Goodell told him to go to Philly.  I am not saying it didn't happen, but it seems like there is a lot of room for interpretation.

He met with Goodell before he could be reinstated and "other reps" maybe those other reps were guys like Tony Dungy.  I know it is popular to hate on the Commish but this seems a little far fetched......then again after today's Pryor ruling I wouldn't put anything past the NFL.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Wow, those sound like his exact words.

I've always wondered with all the bs and spin and obvious propaganda agents, teams, handlers etc. put out, why they never attempt to make a prepared statement from a player sound like it came from the player.

Since I don't feel like going to the joke thread:

A gruff redneck laborer type was siting at the bar grumbling to himself and becoming more and more agitated with each drink. Finally he shouts out "all lawyers are all farging scumbag pieces of shtein and I want to kill every one of them!!"

A well dressed man at the other end of the bar in a $600 suit with a briefcase by his side says back "excuse me sir, but I take umbrage to your libelous ill conceived comment."

The drunk guy gets up and starts toward the other end of the bar, neck veins bulging saying "oh, so you're a lawyer, eh," as he pounds his fists together.

And the other guy says "no, I'm a farging scumbag piece of shtein."   *rim shot*

I agree it's not a city love fest, which is fine, but I think that in the last 2 years Vick (and his agent) has been very careful with what he says in the public and to the media and chooses his words pretty wisely these days.  I think if he wanted to express that he wished he played for Reid the entire time that he would have said just that.  But I think he's giving praise to the entire organization and even to the city itself, albeit indirectly.

yeah none are particularly good but that one is just off the charts bad...they should have just signed it "from the office of the comissioner"
