It's actually pretty sad, especially since he never even really had a career. Outside of drugs, what the hell are his options?

That brought up my thought, how did he get that crippled playing as a rotation guy for only a couple of years?

try sitting in an 18-wheeler 20 hours a day then play for the Eagles--see if youre not drinking liquid darvocet on the regular

11/14/10 is the rule, bubba.  11 hours out of 14 driving then 10 consecutive hours off duty.  They get around it by implementing two man teams, though.

Unkind cut for Barksdale

By MARK SINGELAIS, Staff writer
First published in print: Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Rashad Barksdale was in his hometown of Hudson on Friday night. As he watched his younger brother play baseball, Barksdale received a text message from a New York Giants teammate.

Make that a former teammate.

"I heard you got released," Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas wrote to Barksdale. "Sorry about that."

That was news to Barksdale, a cornerback from the University at Albany, who was getting ready for his first Giants training camp at his alma mater in August.

"It was a shock," he said Monday. "I felt I was making improvement. ... The shocking thing about it is, I didn't receive any phone calls from anybody. I found out through a teammate."

The Giants cut Barksdale to make room in their 80-man roster for rookie corner Stoney Woodson, a seventh-round pick from South Carolina who came to terms with the team Friday.

Barksdale said he eventually got a voicemail from Giants secondary coach Peter Giunta that told him, "Sorry things didn't work out. You did a great job." Giunta also offered to help Barksdale find another team.

But Barksdale was still disappointed he never heard directly from a member of the organization.

"You know, it's the classy thing to do," he said.

Barksdale, 25, signed with the Giants last September after being cut by Kansas City, where he played one season. Barksdale spent the regular season on New York's practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster in the postseason but didn't play.

A Giants spokesman declined comment. Woodson signed on late Friday, which made it more difficult for the Giants to contact Barksdale before they had to release him.

"This is the business side of the NFL," said Tony Agnone, Barksdale's agent. "Most teams contact you before they release you, but not all the time. It's the ugly side nobody talks about."

Agnone said the Giants explained to him that Barksdale "had made progress, but not the kind they wanted him to make."

The timing is bad for Barksdale because many NFL teams have their rosters set for training camp.

Barksdale cleared waivers on Monday at 4 p.m., after which any team could sign him. Agnone said he believes Barksdale is talented enough to get another shot.

"It's a tough situation I'm in," Barksdale said. "I'm not going to let this stop me from trying to pursue my goal."

Barksdale, who has returned to his off-season home in Kansas City, said he would have liked to be in training camp at UAlbany.

"I was really looking forward to getting back on the field where it all started in front of my family and friends," he said.

QuoteGood News for Hard-Luck Ex-Eagle

J.R. Reed made it back to the NFL after that horrible nerve injury he suffered behind his knee, when Reed failed to jump a barbed-wire fence in Feb. 2005, a few weeks after playing for the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX as a rookie returner and safety. But Reed, a solid hitter with tremendous heart, never quite got back all his quickness and lateral movement, using a special brace to help him lift his foot.

Reed eventually played 6 games for the Rams in 2006, 15 for the Eagles in 2007 and five more with the Birds last season, before they cut him. Now he has joined the coaching staff at South Florida, where he played. In this Tampa Bay.com blog post about his new job, it seems Reed is free to go back to the NFL if anyone becomes interested.

I always liked him as a player. For a while after the accident he wasn't even expected to walk again much less play. Good luck to JR.

Pretty sure it was a wrought iron fence, not barbed wire.

Recently, veteran defensive tackle Hollis Thomas visited the Eagles.

Soon, Thomas might be doing more than visiting an NFL city.

Per a league source, Thomas is expected to sign a contract this week.  He is considering four different franchises.

Though it's unclear whether the Eagles remain in the mix, we're told that the Rams are one of the candidates for his services.

Not sure, but I thought I read he left Philly w/o an offer (although I suppose it's possible he could have gotten one in the mean time).

Maybe Reid wants to sign Hollis so he could have a player that he could tell to lose weight.

Awesome, they're now getting so good at scoffing at players that they're doing it to former players as well.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

In pointed comments to ESPN, Owens suggested Goodell is not being sensitive to the price already paid by Vick, who last Monday completed a 20-month federal sentence for his dogfighting conviction.

"The commissioner needs to go sit in jail for 23 months," Owens told ESPN.
