The only way I ever do the right thing is if I am forced to do it by government mandate or doing the right thing benefits me.

If you ask me, the only reason anyone does anything is because it benefits them. How people define something as benfitting them or not varies wildly.

Example: I think paying taxes, in theory anyway, benefits the country and by extension me. Others believe that paying taxes leads to massive mismanagement of monies and ultimately results in nothing good. Both are valid points of view.

But trying to chastise someone by saying that they only 'do the right thing' if it benefits them is retarded since that's the motivation behind every decision that everyone makes.

Why do you help people around you? Because you're so selfless and wonderful? Or because it benefits you to do right by the people around you? To do right by the community? Don't be naive.

That's great. Are you saying that you don't get any benefit out of breast cancer research? You're not a martyr, dude. Advancing medical research benefts everyone. It benefits the greater good, which you are a part of. We're basically saying the same thing only you're being naive about it. I'm saying doing the right thing nearly always benefits you in some way. You're saying that doing the right thing has no impact on your life, positive or negative, which is ridiculous.

The NFL would benefit greatly from treating its players better or giving them more real-world training and opportunities to branch out beyond football. Their reputation would improve, their players would live longer, better lives and the unbelieveable level of cynicism surrounding professional football by the fans could be quelled by simply encouraging its players to be constructive members of society. it isn't charity, and we shouldn't look at it as such. It directly benefits the league to treat its players better. Jesus.

im not going to calculate the 12 degrees of seperation of how breast cancer research might one day directly help me because the chances it will are almost nill and that kind of thinking often doesnt come into my thought process when giving my time or money to causes

but thats neither here nor there the fact is you didnt say people doing good things always benefits them...you said people only do good things if they believe it will benefit them...thats a huge difference and it is also a fantasic mixture of cynicism ignorance and naivete

and you missed the whole point anyway...the money for breast cancer is not the issue...i give a good amount of money to numerous different charities and i could have donated directly to one of hundreds of breast cancer research organizations in this situation...but i donated to this particular person because it will help her reach a personal goal and she is married to a friend...how exactly does that benefit anyone but her

It benefits you because it strengthens your relationship with your friend.

Whatever. Please continue to believe that you do good things out of the goodness of your heart and for no other reason and that you don't benefit from them in any way. It makes you feel better about yourself (again, benefitting you) and so it's probably better that way.

This has got to be the dumbest farging argument I've ever been a part of.
