Nice. I expect you to drop trig knowledge on us now whenever possible. Which is hopefully never. Then again, I didn't think we'd talk about Dickens, Steinbeck, Dos Passos and Hemmingway in The Wire thread, so anything is possible.

I have all but abandoned my plans to go to law school unless I get laid-off. Giving up a good salary for three years to go into a profession that is in shambles and make less money than I'm currently making is a difficult pill to swallow. More difficult to swallow is the fact that I didn't come up with an idea of what I wanted to do with my life until I had a mortgage and responsibilities. Lame.

Edit: I forgot to mention the other thing that's keeping me from going to law school. Every single lawyer that I'm friends/acquaintances with told me not to do it. They said it was miserable and that they more or less hate their jobs. Of course, I was planning to go into the public sector and they're all corporate whores of one kind or another, but still... pretty damning testimony.

And good for you, hb. Keep at it.

Damn straight, good job.

I have much respect for someone who manages to go to college in their 30's.  I couldn't.  I take 30 hours every two years and did another 90 hours for a redundant Florida certification and the 90 nearly wasted me.

Haha, I can identify with this on all fronts. I have many friends who are doctors who have told me the same thing about medical school. They want their kids to be anything but doctors. Amazingly, the people who seem to enjoy their lives the most are the electricians, plumbers, demo guys I know.

DH

the summer after graduating college, i met a girl who was enjoying her last free summer before 1st year law school. we ended up dating for about 3 years - the 1st summer was awesome, but she progressively became a more difficult person to be around as she got deeper into being a student. analysis and arguments about everything, but worst was that she was a different person after 3 years of school than she was beforehand..i broke up with her an hour after her graduation.

rjs246

Yeah but I'm already an argumentative prick, so I doubt that law school could have made me less bearable to be around.

DH

i had that exact thought as i was writing that actually..

here's another one though - i played ball at school with a kid who ended up going to a pretty good law school after graduation (he graduated with honors from rutgers; pretty smart kid). he finished in the top 20% of his law class, got a nice job with a local firm, then got fired due to cuts, and 6 months later still can not find a job practicing. he's now looking for paralegal jobs, while still having a 250K loan to pay back..

rjs246

Oh yeah, the entire field is a mess. There aren't enough jobs for the laid-off lawyers to get work let alone the new lawyers coming out of school. It's a farging catastrophe right now.

Weird. A few months ago, I was notarizing documents for a Physicist that works at Cal-Tech, I asked him about what school he went to and his experiences and all he could do is act like if he could do it over, he'd do something else. Funny you mention plumbers though Z, no one grows up to want to be a plumber...but I know a few plumbers who bring in about $30k-$40k monthly.

Not too farging shabby.

Blowing shtein up would be badass cool. If I ever go back to "school", it's going to be for pyrotechnics, or to be a scuba instructor...something that I didn't make me hate getting up in the morning

I want to get back in school and I've been thinking a lot lately about what it is I'd actually like to study.  I've done logistics for the last 11 years and it's a great job field in the civilian world with a lot of really good paying jobs and I can step right into and start out making something comparable to what I make now.  At the same time though, I think civilian logistics will be a lot more boring than on the military side and I could see myself getting burned out pretty quick.  I really have no desire to work in the corporate world behind a desk or in a cubicle cell.  So that mostly leaves me with trade schools.  I've really been thinking about some sort of small engine mechanics trade school so I can work on motorcycles, jet skis and lawn mowers.  I'm not mechanically inclined, but not because I lack the ability or mentality to work on on engines, I've just never done it.  Are the trade schools worth the price of admission or would I be just as well off to make friends with a couple of serious gearheads and let them teach me for free on the weekends?

I've also thought about being a locksmith but really have no clue how to get into that.  Is there even a school for that or is it just something people sort of "fall" into?  I've got a life long friend who owns a locksmith business and he's told me a million times that I've got a job whenever I want, but he lives in Jersey and I really don't want to move there.

I moved recently so I had to switch colleges...so I'm looked at as a new student...so my registration was two weeks after the start...of course...almost all classes were filled, but the one I needed, Pre-Calculus, had two slots open.

farg, tried to take another one just to fill up some units, and everything had waiting lists on it that were filling up or closed.

Well, Physics and Calculus will have to wait until next semester. Pre-Calculus, what should I be expecting? A blend between Trig and Calculus? Anyone?

*Sarge, did you sign up for anything?

I took pre-calc when I was in high school and didn't have a problem with it, so it's not that difficult (although I obviously couldn't do any of it now). It's pretty much algebra on steroids mixed with trig, if you've got the basic algebra down it shouldn't be too hard. Trigonometry sucks ass and all the rules that a stupid fargin shape like a triangle has are ridiculous, but I think it was pretty easy.
