it's good for the same reason lots of teams in college defer to the 2nd half.  If you have a good defense, put them out there first, get the stop, then you get the first possession after halftime, which helps if you're trailing...

If you have a good defense, why would you be trailing at halftime?

I've always been in favor of kicking off first and putting the defense on the field, especially in the playoffs when players may be a little more amped up than usual.  I'd much rather have an over excited defense on the field first instead of the offense.  And putting the offense on the field to start the 2nd half is better because you've got the entire first half the evaluate and adjust to.  Of course, this isn't relevant to Reid, but it is to just about every other coach out there.
