I love the death penalty in theory. In practice it has been misused. But abstractly, I love me some revenge killing.

I have no problem with individual vendetta's.  I have a problem with the state murdering its citizens under the guise of justice.  Oh, and Carrie-Anne Moss is on television right now in Red Planet.  Horrible movie but goddamn it, she's hot.

Intellectually, I agree. Governments should probably not be allowed to end the lives of their citizens, especially in our case since it has more or less been only black men who have actually been killed. I get all of that and there's a part of me that agrees.

What I'm saying is that mass murderers, rapists, 'insert generic derogatory name for an anti-social douche who cannot function within the bounds of decent human behavior', whatever forfeit their right to life when they start killing others. It would be great if we could count on individual vendettas to take care of that, then we could believe that our government is above things like that and we'd all sleep tight at night, but we can't count on individuals to go all Charles Bronson on people so I can't hate the death penalty the way I would if I had only read about it in a text book.

I have no trouble opposing it in all cases.  It's an extreme position I make no apology for:  a government that kills its own citizens by policy is a bad government, and one that no citizen could rightfully be expected to respect, serve, etc.
