QuoteLito Sheppard thought it was a joke.

After a report surfaced that Sheppard is seeking a trade from the Eagles, Comcast SportsNet's Derrick Gunn called the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback to seek its validity.

"He told me he knew nothing about this," Gunn said Monday on the 6:30 p.m. SportsNite. "As a matter of fact, he thought I was joking until he realized that I wasn't."

Later Monday night, the Eagles denied the report.

"Any reports that suggest we have allowed Lito or his agent to seek a trade are absolutely and undeniably false," a team spokesman said.

The report stems from Sheppard's purported dissatisfaction with his contract, which he signed in 2004 and runs through 2011. He is scheduled to earn $2 million next season, $3 million in 2009, $3.7 million in 2010 and $4.25 million in 2011.

"He's felt that he has outperformed his contract, especially when he made the Pro Bowl (last season), and that after the 2007 season, he was going to see if the Eagles would redo his contract or he was going to push for a trade," Gunn said. "First and foremost, Lito wants to be in Philadelphia, but he wants to be what he is considering to be in the top 5 or 10 cornerbacks in the NFL.

"Now, if this is true, that the Eagles are going to allow Lito to seek a trade, that tells me first and foremost that the Eagles, like a lot of other teams out there are interested in Asante Samuel, who is expected to be on the free agent market. That could be rolling the dice a little bit."

Outperformed his contract?

Sure, if he played in all 16 games.

I think he could be a top 5-10 CB if he stayed healthy. But that's a bigger if then anyone else on the team.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

since he has signed his deal he absolutely has outperformed making five million over the next two years...compare that money to other cb's in the nfl regardless of how many games they have played...he is easily underpaid

If he hadn't missed 14 games over the past three years he might have a point.  Fact is, he's injury prone and even when he's healthy he's not a top-5 cornerback and I in all honesty I don't think he's a top 10 cornerback either.

And by the way... no one put a farging gun to his head and told him to sign his contract.  It's a tired argument that he's outplayed his deal because his deal is what it is.  He knew it when he signed it so he should abide by it.

Munson

His last three seasons.

2005: 10 games, 28 solo tackles, 3 INT's, 1 FF, 1 sack
2006: 13 games, 25 tackles, 6 INT's, 1 TD
2007: 11 games, 47 tackles, 2 INT's

No, he hasn't out performed his contract.

He can't stay healthy, and has played exactly one full season. And it's not like he's Westbrook has played so ridiculously well that it doesn't matter how many games he misses. A game or two a season isn't too bad (2004), but when you're missing 1/3rd or 1/4th of the season, it's bad.

ive said this before and ill say it again you should never weigh in on matters of money in pro sports because of youre incredible anti player stance and bias towards management and ownership

and regardless whether you think lito is a top ten cb (and he def is) the fact remains that he is underpaid...just take a gander around the nfl at the cb's being paid as much or more than him

injuries you have a leg to stand on...he definitely needs to stay healthier...but when hes on the field hes one of the best in the nfl

1 more stat....

He only had 9 passes defended in 05, and 5 this year, according to the stats.

2006 was by far his best year, where he defended 19 passes. 1 great year doesn't=outperforming contract.

Now if he played 15 or 16 games a year, like in 04, and consistently put up stats like that...then sure.

stop quoting cb stats...they mean nothing...anyone who knows even a little about football knows that lito is a all pro caliber corner when healthy and even with his games missed hes worth more than hes being paid...if he were on the FA market he would get a ton of money...when the gary baxters rod hoods and anthony henrys are making more than you then something is wrong

The Eagles can't tear contracts up and reschedule them all the time because it would throw their entire financial structure into chaos.  If that's what you want then start cheering for the maroon & gold.

fair point and im not saying they should tear up his contract...but he is underpaid and is losing all his prime money making years on his current contract...i dont blame the eagles if they dont renegotiate because of the injuries but i also dont blame lito for trying to get more money

He IS an all pro CB when healthy...WHEN HEALTHY being a big issue considering he's been averaging missing about 1/4th of the season the last 3 years. 1/4th of a season is 4 games. 4 games is the differece between 8-8 and out of the playoffs, and 10-6 or 11-5 and in.

Keep me out of the Minion group, i dont disagree that he is  underpaid, its the whole bullshtein in the NFL at this point of players complaining that they dont make enough.  You sign what you sign.  Plus the fact that he's been injured as much as Donovan seemingly since the SB run
