NFL.com: Schefter's 5 teams that have shown interest in Jason Taylor

QuotePhiladelphia –- Throughout the offseason, the Eagles have tried to make a big splash. First they landed free-agent cornerback Asante Samuel. Then they nearly signed free-agent wide receiver Randy Moss. They inquired about trading for Cincinnati wide receiver Chad Johnson. And they have looked into the possibility of trading for Taylor. Eagles coach Andy Reid never has enough defensive linemen. During the Reid era, the Eagles have drafted a defensive lineman with their top pick five times in nine years, including this past year, when Philadelphia drafted Notre Dame defensive tackle Trevor Laws in the second round with the 47th overall pick. Taylor would team with Pro Bowl defensive end Trent Cole to give the Eagles a dynamic pass-rushing tag team.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

I'm all about picking up Taylor but Tuna is asking way too much for him.  Dude is only going to play 1 or 2 more years.  I'd think about giving up a 3rd rd pick but nothing higher.  If he plays 2 years and his production stays in line with what he's done over the last few years then it would be worth it.

I'd give up the Eagles' 3rd round pick in a heartbeat for Taylor.  Because while most teams would still be looking for bonafide starters and contributors... the Eagles are already taking fliers on small school projects and players they want to switch positions.

whenever people used to bitch about unused cap space, the FO lovers would always rush to the team's defense by claiming that they actually spend towards the top of league in actual payroll each year.  the USA Today has a search engine where you can look at each year from 2000 to 2007 and see how each team ranks in overall payroll.

http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/totalpayroll.aspx?year=2005

here's how the Eagles looked:

2000 - 11th
2001 - 17th
2002 - 6th
2003 - 17th
2004 - 2nd
2005 - 28th
2006 - 14th
2007 - 16th

only 2 years they were in the top 10 and the one year they were top 3 they went to the Super Bowl.  not exactly the commitment to winning that we're always being fed.

I don't know who would believe that the Eagles are always towards the top of the league in spending each year.  I don't know how that would be possible considering that the Eagles are usually at the top in terms of unspent cap dollars.

Looking back, the worst thing that could have happened to this franchise under the current regime, was for them to win (alot) early on while being cheap about it.  It gave them this disillusion that they don't need to spend money in order to reach the top.  And while I'm not advocating undisciplined spending the like the Racists, the Eagles have failed to find that happy medium where they are spending smartly on high priced talent to go along with their core of moderately priced players.

Just once I would like to see them jump out of the gate and overspend to bring the best free agent player in...

id take undiciplined spending every day all day as long as i thought my team had a chance for a title...you need to target your spending...i have absolutely no problem taking it easy some years and building thru the draft and with young players especially if you arent an upper echelon team...my biggest issue was all those years of being a superbowl challenger and only one year did they make any sort of power moves to take that extra leap

its also not just about hitting the free agent market with abandoned it making the players you already have well paid...for example its inexcusable to have all that extra money and have westbrook not be properly compensated...and if you have the money why not give lito a few extra bucks to make him happy and have a truly dominant secondary...instead they go out and put 20 mil guaranteed towards a position that wasnt in great need of help while these verteran guys who have been putting in work with the team for years and are underpaid

You really worded that well to leave yourself an opening to bitch about what they do, no matter which way they go. Bravo.

PS. Unhappy players play better.

i know its hard for you to hear anything negative at all about the front office and when someone does criticize in your mind that means they always do but the fact is i havent bitched about an offseason since the mcmahon debacle (thats three years dookie).....i also loved 2004
