Centreville family's dog strangled

Police are investigating the strangulation of a family's 4-year-old golden retriever in the yard of a multimillion-dollar home in Centreville.

Officers were called by the dog's owner about 6:10 p.m. Monday after she found the dog dead underneath a large pine tree, New Castle County police spokesman Cpl. Trinidad Navarro said today.

The home is in the 200 block of Dogwood Slope Road, off Owls Nest Road.

The canine – named Kelsey – was taken to a veterinarian, who determined the dog died from asphyxiation.

Navarro said police reviewed tapes from a number of security cameras on her property and discovered the image of a man on the tape about 2:40 p.m. struggling with the dog.

John E. Caldwell, director of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said the incident was not reported to the SPCA.

"We do cruelty investigations if it is reported to the SPCA," he said. "I am not aware of the situation."

Navarro said it is not unheard of that county police would investigate the murder of a family pet.

"It's a trespassing case, and there might be some other circumstances involved," he said.

Police are asking anyone with information on the incident to call 395-8005.
