PHILADELPHIA — The Flyers could have let their sleeping dog lie.

They could have let rookie Steve Downie soak up his first Stanley Cup playoff experience as a locker-room spectator. They could have sent him to the Phantoms and let him play 20 minutes a night in the Calder Cup playoffs.

But when the stakes were at their highest in Game 7 against the Washington Capitals, the Flyers let their 20-year-old werewolf loose.

"I just wanted to be ready when they needed me," said Downie, his voice still hoarse from having to scream above the noise at Montreal's Bell Centre.

Flyers coach John Stevens said he never blinked an eye when it came time to replace Mike Knuble in the lineup for Game 7 against the Capitals.

"I call him a big-game player," the coach said of Downie. "It seems like the bigger the game, the better he is. He doesn't get intimidated by the situation. He has the ability to focus on hockey; it doesn't matter what's around him."

Downie found a bunch of Canadiens around him Monday night after he was called for tripping Montreal rookie goaltender Carey Price late in the first. Replays revealed Downie never touched Price and the goalie took a spill behind his net without Downie's help.

That didn't stop Maxim Lapierre and Mike Komisarek from jumping Downie and pummeling him with punches.

Apparently, Downie's reputation as a wild-eyed cheap-shot artist has followed him through the playoffs. He's been called for six minorsin his first four games.

"I just want to play tough, hit people when I can and keep it simple," Downie said.

Stevens thinks Downie, who grew up in Newmarket, Ontario, is adverse to pressure. When Stevens called him into his office earlier in the season following Downie's 20-game suspension for drilling Dean McAmmond of the Ottawa Senators, he warned him about the attention he'd get from officials and opposing teams.

"It was almost like he didn't know what I was talking about," Stevens said.

Downie has seen limited ice time in a fourth-line role with center Jim Dowd and Sami Kapanen, but he's loving every minute of it.

"It's unbelievable," he said. "I'm just trying to take it all in and play smart."

Playing smart is something Downie will need to do if he hopes to stay in the lineup once Knuble returns from his left hamstring injury. Knuble is aiming at a return Wednesday, and Downie could be the one to sit.

Stevens suggested otherwise.

"As time moves on in this series, you may see him get a little more ice time," Stevens said. "He's got a combination of skill and grit you love this time of year."

"Steve's got a knack for coming up with pucks," Holmgren said. "He's got a real heavy stick, and he's a hard-nosed little guy."

Dowd believes if Downie can somehow weave his skill set into his desire, he can become the prototypical Flyer.

"I think he's a great hockey player, and I love playing with him," Dowd said.

"He's a very smart hockey player. He's only 20 years old. The sky is the limit for him. He keeps his head on straight and works hard, he's going to be a hell of a player."

Nope. Bad karma.

Trap games don't exist...but...karma does.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.
