Sources: Andrews' injury could be serious
By LES BOWEN

The possibility still exists that Shawn Andrews wasn't just being emotional, after all.

Despite Eagles coach Andy Reid's repeated assertions that he expects Andrews to be ready for the start of the regular season, Sept. 9 at Green Bay, medical sources say there is a prospective diagnosis that fits Andrews' "tear-jerker" assessment of what he was told by an ankle specialist last week.

In his conversation with reporters Wednesday, Andrews was asked about his rehab, and he mentioned using a bone stimulator. According to medical sources, there are only two reasons why Andrews would use bone stimulation, an unhealed fracture, which is unlikely, or osteonecrosis, also known as avascular necrosis.

Osteonecrosis would mean that a section of bone involved in Andrews' 2004 fibula repair has not been getting an adequate blood supply and is deteriorating. Most likely the talus bone, a small bone in the ankle, would be affected, a medical source said. The condition is treatable, but if it is serious enough, the treatment would be a bone graft, the source said, which would sideline Andrews for the season.

Reid, asked about this scenario last night by the Daily News following his postgame news conference, flatly denied it. And he denied that Andrews has been getting bone stimulation.

"There's nothing like that," Reid said. "He has a high ankle sprain, a relatively mild one. He'll be fine. This all getting out of hand."

It seems unlikely that Reid would flatly and repeatedly deny that Andrews has a serious problem if he felt there was any chance of being accused later of not having told the truth.

But Andrews, selected for his first Pro Bowl last season, hinted darkly Wednesday that the injury the team has been calling a sprained ankle was much more serious. He refused to say whether more surgery on the ankle is necessary. He is walking in a boot, though he seems to be walking normally and is not using crutches.

Medical sources said on Wednesday that arthritis and possible spreading of the joint could be what Andrews was talking about; those would be less serious problems than osteonecrosis, but a source said they wouldn't require bone stimulation.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Rich Moran, agent for Shawn Andrews, insists that his client does not have osteonecrosis, the possible diagnosis offered in Saturday's Daily News that medical sources said would account for Andrews' assertion that he was using a bone stimulator, and for his characterization of his talk with a specialist as a "tearjerker."

Eagles coach Andy Reid said Friday night that Andrews has a high ankle sprain. Moran said he agrees with Reid that Andrews should be ready for the start of the season . . .

That would be a beautiful thing.  I want him to be right for the season opener though... not just alright enough to play but it's a situation where he could farg his ankle up more.  We're dealing with what could be a HOF lineman here.  If it means protecting him long-term... I'll endure Scott Young or MJG for the time being.

Whoever.  Really doesn't matter to me.  Neither one of them are shtein compared to Andrews at this point anyway.  I just don't want Andy farging up Andrews' career.

From the Spew.

Quote Offensive guard Shawn Andrews is expected back at practice on Monday. Tight end L.J. Smith has taken part in pre-game warmups the last two games and seems to be ready to ramp it up for the regular season.

I have my fingers crossed. A lot hinges on him being healthy. Possibly the whole season.

Andrews just said on sportsnight that he said what he said to get the media riled up just to see what types of things they'd say :-D
