Am I the only one who's having a hard time getting fired up about this? I like the dude and think that he's a good addition, but all this talk of boners and whatnot just isn't happening for me.

i love spikes and hes a good addition but overall as a team the birds are no better now than before free agency and are possibly worse...the team was smart tho because getting spikes...and moreso getting RID of dhani has fired up the fanbase and taken heat off of them...and at the same time they got rid of a player who wanted more money...def an A+ week for the front office

FYI:  Under his current deal, Spikes is scheduled to make $4.5m this year and $5m next year.

So, you read that they're likely just to keep his current deal?  That basically guarantees that Dhani or Trotter will be cut... Hopefully Dhani, because at least Trotter brings leadership and intensity, instead of poetry and bowties.

Well, either way they'd have an out.  This way, they have an IN to keep him for another year at the relative bargain price of $5m if he tears shtein up and the achilles holds up nicely.

Getting him via trade means all the bonus money and cap hit from bonus money is the responsibility of his old team.  All the Eagles have to do is pay his salary.  So, unless part of his salary is guaranteed (which is rare in the NFL), they would have had a "true out" regardless of a team option for 2008.
