Yeah, those potato rolls are the shtein.

And I'm gonna guess they don't sell 'em down here. I'll look anyways.

I can't find pierogies either.

But I did find scrapple in HEB the other day.

nice, Scrapple is delicious, just have to find a good brand.  Delaware Maid is the best, its covered in lard.

the guests, as they are called, at the soup kitchen where I volunteer, cannot be denied.  When you come around with the basket of bread, they prefer, in this order:

Potato
Raisin
White
Wheat
Everything else (multigrain, artisinal, etc.), most of which they reject out of hand even in the absence of the options above

once again, vigy proves that he is as street as a homeless dude

So much for the "beggars can't be choosers" maxim.

Tell me about it.  The most lyrically gifted welfare-hating, racist conservative would be hard pressed to characterize the degree of entitlement some of these people demand as their birthright.   Some of them treat the volunteers who serve them as, quite literally, servants.  It's infuriating.

Of course, that's not the majority at all.  Most are well mannered, even grateful, and obviously need the help.

The bread preference is however almost perfectly universal.  The consensus is clear, and exactly mimics the choice a child would make:  sweet, no-nutritional value food>healthy.

whole foods and the like get fat tax breaks and free publicity for donating day old bread even though the needy turn their nose up at it.

no joke, I know farmers who feed Whole Foods bread to their chickens because the local church can't move nearly half the donated stuff, so they in turn give the rest to local farmers

at least they can donate it...the rules and regulations on what grocery stores can give away to shelters and other like organizations is outrageous...anything out of date has to be thrown away...for example perfectly fine meat that is a day past its expiration date gotta go...except they will let their workers take some home...but cant donate it to an organization that helps the homeless...

and im talking hundreds of pounds of good ass meats...all the way up to filets

i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

perhaps the law is different regarding bread?  at the soup kitchen, we don't care what the date is...we inspect for mold and for stale/hardness, and pitch anything borderline.  Which means lots of bread past the sell by date is offered to the ungrateful masses

its not different but youre talking about day old bread....im talking about expiration dates...stuff slips thru but you are not supposed to be getting bread past its shelf date

you'll also get a lot sicker from rotten meat than you will from moldy bread.

its not meat....its ANYTHING...if its past the shelf date youre not allowed to give it away

i was using meat as an example because much of it is very expensive and it also has a much quicker turnaround than most items thus it gets watsed much more often

also the shelf date on meat is a week or more before it would actually be harmful to anyone
