The Gracies are a family of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experts.  They started the Ultimate Fighting Championship, essentially to make Royce Gracie look good.  They got a pile of supposedly inferior fighters together, who Royce whipped regularly, until Kimo showed up.  Kimo caught Royce with a lucky kick to the face.  Royce was able to wrap him up and lock an arm for a submission, but couldn't continue.

After that, he only fought in exhibition, until Ken Shamrock caught him again with a kick, which led to a draw.  After that, the Gracies stopped fighting in the UFC.

Rumor has it, the Gracies had a standing policy, come to Brazil, fight a family member of equal belt.  If you win, they give you $1MM cash.  That never happened.

Royce came back eitherthis year or last and fought Matt Hughes (i think) He got the living crap kicked out of him, it was nice to see.

Heh.....I always thought his name was Hoyce. 

I only watched the first several UFC's.  Once it started picking up steam and gaining popularity I quit watching because it became too much like boxing/wwf with all the promoting and hoopla surrounding it.  I liked it better when it was more "underground" than with all the glitz and glamour they give it now.
