F.B.I. and Justice Dept. Said To Seek Charges for Petraeus

WASHINGTON — The F.B.I. and Justice Department prosecutors have recommended bringing felony charges against retired Gen. David H. Petraeus for providing classified information to his former mistress while he was director of the C.I.A., officials said, leaving Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. to decide whether to seek an indictment that could send the pre-eminent military officer of his generation to prison.

The Justice Department investigation stems from an affair Mr. Petraeus had with Paula Broadwell, an Army Reserve officer who was writing his biography, and focuses on whether he gave her access to his C.I.A. email account and other highly classified information. F.B.I. agents discovered classified documents on her computer after Mr. Petraeus resigned from the C.I.A. in 2012 when the affair became public.

Hays said he filed the bill because he said he believed students in history classes are receiving "erroneous," negative perspectives about America's history, policies and influence in the world.

"Frankly, it's embarrassing that we allow these lies to be taught in our school system," Hays said. "Unfortunately, our parents and our school board members have not kept up with the misrepresentation of American history that is being perpetrated in our school system, and this movie gives a totally different view."

shtein like this is one of the reasons why I support heavy federal oversight of curriculum. It's not a farging "misrepresentation" to point out to students that we did a lot of farged up shtein in our history.

And, frankly, all I got growing up was the rose colored glasses version of our history. It wasn't until my AP US class where we actually talked in depth about some of our not so nice things.

I honestly don't care anymore.  The garbage these right-wing iceholes spew is laughable and my child is now old enough to see for herself the hypocritical bullshtein they try and pass off as patriotic righteousness.   This country is evil to the core and it's getting worse.  The bigotry, the racism, the nihilism, the unrestrained greed... it's like a poison and this country simply is destined for the abyss.  There's no stopping it, there's no correcting it, and there's no point getting angry about it anymore.

Granted, I grew up in the 1980s in rural Chester County (graduated from Downingtown), but that's pretty much all I got as well.  Didn't get to dig into the "dirty stuff" until majoring in history in college.

I try to keep things simple when I teach history to my 8th graders - the founding fathers were human, not some demigods that many portray them to be.  Washington had bad dental work and may have been sterile.  Jefferson had a disconnect between his prose about "inalienable rights" and his owning hundreds of slaves (Washington did, too, for that matter).  Lincoln's views about slavery and black rights evolved over a period of time, and was prone to use the forbidden "n-word" when referring to African-Americans.

It's more honest - and quite frankly a better story - to give it to the kids unvarnished.  We have a lot of positives in our nation, but there are definitely a bunch of warts.

A spat between the United States and China threatens the future of solar power.

But the good times could be coming to an end. It's not that China is cutting off the supply of cheap panels. It's that the United States is threatening to slap new tariffs on them that could sharply drive up the price. It would also likely prompt China to retaliate with more duties on U.S.-manufactured polysilicon, a key ingredient in those panels.

The push comes from America's small and struggling domestic solar-panel manufacturing industry, which can't compete with the discounted wares from China. Ironically, it's a German-owned firm, SolarWorld AG, whose U.S. division is lobbying for the federal government to protect it from foreign rivals. On the other side are U.S. solar panel installers that rely on Chinese goods. As analyst Eric Wesoff once joked, one side is wearing an American flag over a German flag, and the other has an American flag draped over a Chinese flag.
