^^^^Yup

Also, like many other childhood problems, obesity disproportionally effects on a socio-economic scale. Poorer, and thus blacker, children tend to be eating more unhealthy because unhealthy food is more affordable. Of course that racist hick from Alaska won't know shtein about it.

No. Are you saying black kids are more apt to eat unhealthy because the food is cheaper? Cmon'. That just isn't true. It's all kids from all walks of life. Junk food, fast food and school lunches are the main culprits here, as are parents that are either too lazy or just uneducated as to whats healthy and whats not. It's not any more expensive to eat less and more healthy food.

Uhhhh...yes, it is true. The children that have seen the biggest increase in obesity over the last 10 years have been inner city children, which also means minority children. Yes, it's happening to all children, but it's a bigger problem amongst African American and Hispanic kids. You're arguing about something that has been researched and proven, it's not just an opinion of mine.

Well, I know what I see, and no, I don't see inner city kids. I also wonder who is doing this research. I have an open mind, convince me. I know that as a single father I'm in the grocery store on avg. of twice a week, and you can eat healthy and do it cheap. I'm not talking about the crap thats labeled 'heart healthy', fat free' or anything like that. Main thing I try to do is balance the food groups out. And no matter what is on the plate, there has to be veggies. Too many parents out there think that a burger and fries, or pizza and wings are feeding kids good.

Munson

Well yes, part of the problem is the parents. (BTW, Good ole ronald reagan declared that french fries are a vegetable....yeah..)

I'm far too tired right now to actually find the evidence, so I'll use the cop out and say every book I've bought for my education classes has a chapter on  physical development and all have mentioned the biggest increase in child obesity is being seen in minorities and poorer kids. What might be "cheap healthy food" to you still is too expensive for the inner city single mother, and that's assuming she's a good parent who actually tries. Imagine what the children of parents who don't give a farg are eating.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

You can get a frozen pack of greens in Food Lion for less than 2 bucks, and when on sale, you can get canned veggies for 39 cents. Sometimes chicken is on sale at between 50 cents and a dollar a pound. You can get a whole chicken for around 5-6 bucks a lot of the time. Turkey has been on sale at Acme for 39 cents a pound for the last three weeks. I know it's because of Thanksgiving, but you can still find it on sale a lot of the time. Apples, oranges, and the like are cheap. You can't tell me that a inner city Mom with an independance card can't feed her kids somewhat healthy if she wants. I'm not talking about a Jack Lalane diet or anything.

Looks like all govt employees are going to not see raises for 2 years

I grew up in the richest school district in the state, and yeah we had a salad bar...but the main lunch every day was chicken fries, or chicken patties, or pizza day, etc....go to any school district in the country and those are more or less the main courses of lunches. Pointing out the few exceptions here or there don't change the rule.

Not that that really matters because your socioeconomic status shouldn't determine what you are fed at school.

it all comes back to the home. (which is why is quoted the one part of your post) parents need to do a better job raising their kids which includes what they eat. buy some fruit instead of cheese curls for your kids to eat and if they say no let them sit with an empty stomach. that stalk of celery will look very good after a while.

My kids used to eat a lot of fruit with an extra like yogurt or peanut butter. Grapes, peaches, berries, and the like even if it's sugared down and served with a little whipped topping are still better than Doritos, chips, or cheese curls, and cheaper if you look at Doritos costing over three bucks a bag.

Munson

Fruit is delicious. I wish I ate it more.

Fruit is gross. Whatever nutrients you can't get from beer and cigarettes, you can get from fruity tasting gummy vitamins
