President Obama will release a new proposal Wednesday that will include Republican ideas on tort reform and health savings accounts, according to Democratic officials familiar with the plans.

So, during Obama's speech today he tacitly gave the go-ahead to use reconciliation to get healthcare reform passed. Here's the deal:

1. The House will pass the Senate bill, bringing it to Obama's desk for signature.
2. The Senate will then use reconciliation votes to make ammendments to the bill to bring it more in line with what Obama actually wants to see, including presumably the tort reform and compromise points that have been discussed earlier.

The Republicans in power have made it very clear that they don't want a bill at all. Or if they do, they want it completely right wing-minded. Meanwhile, they'll talk out of the other side of their mouths about how the Dems refuse to work with them.

Cantor is my representative in the House and in the 4 months I've lived in his district he's gotten 5 letters from me. Based on this kind of overly partisan political bullshtein I don't see that slowing down any time soon.

I got a relatively topical response from his office on one of them. About the paring down of the Patriot Act actually. So someone in his office read them.

That's cool. I've always thought "maybe I should write so-and-so a letter" but I'm too lazy and just assume they wouldn't read it.

In my experiences I've received a response of some sort (form letter or otherwise) about 50% of the time that I've been compelled to write a member of congress. I've probably only done it a dozen times or so though.

Letters are still taken seriously, at least more serious than phone calls, emails, or what have you.

Oh I've never written an actual letter. All emails. shtein I don't know if I've written a letter since I was like 12 years old.
