the problem with the tea party movement is that other than anti spending just about every single other belief they hold is non progressive non inclusive borderline insane and hateful

How are you defining "progressive?"

if they had some sort of random coaltition they might be be taken seriously

i mean their big "convention" was in nashville

and all their big rallies are primarily in the south and midwest and are colorless

Using color to define progressivism is about as regressive as anything I can even think of...

even if you have a singular respectable stance on something it will never get taken seriously when you mix it in with a potpourri of nonsense

kind of like if the kkk was pro enviroment

The Tea Partiers just don't like you stealing there money with higher taxes :-D

Yeah, the only taxes going up are those on the rich. The argument can be made about the vice taxes effecting middle class, but paying 10 cents more for a bottle of soda aint the same as taking a few dollars more out of the paycheck every week.

The Tea Party is going to consist of old white rich racists and poor white MA racists. And a few otherwise ignorant people that just wanna scream "lower taxes and spending!" without any understanding of how it works. And if it becomes a real party, it will split the GOP in two and make it hard for them to win some elections. So I'm all for it.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Actually, the sentiment behind the whole tea party thing was going on before the current administration. It took the "stimulus" to really spur them into action, though.

I'm happy with lowering taxes, as long as it's across the board. Government in the business of redistribution of wealth is a bad idea.

Don't even get me started on vice taxes. Trying to use taxes to change a behavior, and then collecting from the continuation of that behavior, is just a farging joke.

rjs246

As I've mentioned many many times. Taxes actually will have to increase, across the board not just on the wealthy, in order for the budget to ever be balanced again. Cutting taxes is a political gold mine and a fiscal absurdity.

^^^^^What he said.

For all the bitching and moaning that goes on in this country about taxes, we're the least taxed of the "rich" countries...and it's probably no coincidence that we're also in the worst shape.

rjs246

There are two problems.

1. Wild governmental inefficiency with the money they do collect. This is a product of earmarks, and lobbyists and corporations being given free reign to control political policy.

2. Not collecting enough in the first place. One of the lowest-taxed populations in the developed world.

The first problem undermines efforts to fix the second. And round and round we go.
