None of the quotes from johnny on the street ever mentioned it once. The politicians got the people all riled up to generate some more affected fear and anger and then toned down their rhetoric by emphasizing the lesson plan. It's an old ass political trick but it's still laughable how transparent it is.

Edit: In the interest of full disclosure, I'll admit that I only read 2 or 3 articles on the subject before I was angry enough by the ignorant quotes of the random interviewees that I felt I had read enough. Feel free to prove my point wrong about the lesson plan being the issue from the beginning.

I'm not going to say that there aren't people holding their kids home because of their inherent racism.  I just know when I first read about the issue, it was a link to the document being distributed as a lesson plan.

I'm not making something out of anything.  I don't have kids, and I wouldn't be keeping them home regardless.  Counter-intuitive to keep your kids away from an education for a day to avoid a half hour speech. 

At the end of the day, your kids are going to have the values you preach day in and day out, and wouldn't be influenced by a 20 minute diatrabe, even if it was highly politicized... which this speech clearly isn't.

It's not desperate at all.  If parents don't agree with Obama's policies, and don't want them to listen to his speech, what's the issue???
If you want your kids to hear it, than go ahead and let them hear it.  Seems pretty simple to me.
