In fact, Obama's budget, on net, reduces the deficit. In recent years, Congress and the president have relied on a series of budget gimmicks to mask the size of the deficit. For instance, they would assume that certain tax breaks would expire starting a year in the future, but routinely extend them a year at a time. According to the Congressional Budget Office's numbers, Obama's budget--compared to continuing current policies--would make the deficit $900 billion lower over the next decade.

There's a lot of empirical evidence that Obama's reforms, based on small-scale state and local experiments, can improve educational outcomes. There's also a lot of evidence that improved educational outcomes can produce significantly higher economic growth. A 2008 paper by Eric Hanushek, Dean T. Jamison, Eliot A. Jamison, and Ludger Woessmann of the conservative Hoover Institution calculated that raising our average math and science test scores by 50 points (which would bring us on par with Canada and Korea, but still well behind countries like Taiwan and Finland) would increase GDP by more than one-third over the next 75 years--a staggering gain.

I am not going to bother debating the merits of a "conservative" justice versus a "liberal" justice, because those differences are understandable.  But when someone has a track record of changing the rulings of lower courts over half the time... isn't that a little bit of a red flag of an attention wh*re?
