Intelligence makes me hard and I'm super turned on by our President. His speech today was farging brilliant and this is just a generic snippet that illustrates his ability to defuse partisan minefields on both sides of the aisle...

Is there a more artificial and damning measure of a person than their credit history? Credit ratings and histories were concocted by companies who want to give credit. Think about that. It's circular nonsense and now we as a society are so beholden to it that you are openly wondering what a 21 year old will do without a credit history to point to... IT'S ABSURD.

Credit ratings are a joke. I've repaired my credit from the trash heap because when I was 18-21 I was dumb and didn't care about paying bills on time. But I fixed myself and now I'm in a pretty good spot. What gets me is how each company has a different score. I subscribe to myFICO.com and Experian recently pulled the ability to monitor your credit on the site.

How can they do that? You have no way (other than the free report yearly) to monitor that report. I'm not asking for someone else's information; I want my own. I want to make sure nothing is wrong with it but some company decides that I cannot buy the info (and having to pay for it is stupid, but another argument) that they are collecting about me. What's up with that?

And good for the new card bill. Credit card companies will farg you the first chance they get.

The worst part about all of this is that our collective reliance on credit has allowed housing and education prices to balloon out of control at rates that are laughably larger than inflation. You know, housing and education, two things that we actually need. So now buying a house and going to college are so expensive that they require everyone to be in debt for DECADES on end. Decades of paying a mortgage that is considered 'affordable' if it's only 30% of your income (pre-tax).

shtein, I went to a state school for undergrad and it cost over $80,000. That's insane. I loved Penn State but if a kid of mine ever tries to go there from out of state I'll laugh in his face.

Anyway, certain people like to wail and piss and moan about taxes, but in my opinion the ridiculously inflated housing and education prices of the past 25 years are significantly more to blame for our collective belt-tightening than a marginal 3% increase in the tax rate could ever be.

Thank you society for buying into the idea of credit. iceholes.

here's some great financial advice i learned from my grandfather when i was a kid.  i never understood it until maybe 4 or 5 years ago:

own your assets, lease your fun. 

here's another one.  it's highly overused to the point of being cliche but that doesn't make it any less valid:  if you can't pay cash for it, you probably don't need it.  the obvious exception(s) to the rule would be buying a house, a car and a bar tab. 

i wish i wouldn't have been able to get credit cards when i was 18.  dept stores handed them out like candy on halloween and i was a trick or treatin' son of a bitch.  by the time i was 20 i had close to 15 different store cards and maxed them out to the point that i couldn't afford to pay anything more than the minimum monthly payment.......which at 19% interest, is basically just paying the interest and putting almost nothing towards the actual balance.  granted, at 21 i probably wasn't that much smarter with my spending but at least i could have gotten some new credit cards to take with me to the bar and sent my credit report down the very same toilet i was puking into.  that would have been way better than blowing the money on clothes and sterio equipment.
