President Obama will seek to cut the federal deficit in half by the end of his first term, according to an administration official.

Most of the savings would come from spending less on the war in Iraq, raising taxes on those who make more than $250,000 a year and streamlining government, the official told CNN

Yeah, let's talk about streamlining the government right after spending 800 billion bucks.  

The president's budget proposal for fiscal year 2010 projects that the estimated $1.3 trillion deficit he inherited from the Bush administration will be halved to $533 billion by 2013, or from 9.2 percent of the gross domestic product to 3 percent, the official said.

If he can do that I will consider him the politcal Messiah and he would have my vote until he's done.

I guess I can see the irony if you look at the situation in a vacuum, but if he can both cut the deficit AND get the recovery act to show some results we should all applaud him.

Intelligent reform of entitlements would save an assload of money on its own. It doesn't even need to be just a cut-and-run type of situation. Whatever. Reform is the smart way to do things and I'll be shocked out of my pants if the government is able to accomplish anything along the lines of real reform to save money.

The question should be >IF< after eight years Obama is able to eliminate the deficit and begin to actually pay down the debt (as Clinton was beginning to be able), will we elect another moron who will be able to convince 51 percent of Americans that heck - The "surplus" is YOUR money, and we should reduce taxes for EVERYONE. (Equally that is, wink-wink). And therby ensure four to eight more years of worsening the national debt.
