If you tax the wealthy more, you'll have the trickle down effect of the rich getting less rich and the poor getting poorer.

Someone pretty smart said this a long time ago.  But, he must be pretty dumb by today's Dem standards.

"You cannot help the poor by tearing down the rich. You cannot help the wage earner by hurting the wage payer."

There is an important difference between 'tearing down' the wage payer and treating them by the same rules that the wage earner is subjected to.

My opinion on the similarities are, semantics aside, that taxing the wealthy (re: business) in an attempt to help the poor or wage earner, doesn't work.  Less money at the top will not equal more money at the bottom.  At least that's the interpretation I take from the quote.   Like anything else written, interpretations will differ.

Maybe I should ask Bill and Ted what Abe meant.

It's friggen' stupid anyway for Obama to think he can increase taxes for the wealthy and have it work. Big business pays thousands to lawyers and accountants. They will just find a way around it anyway.

I actually agree with your interpretation. My point is simply this. If you cut taxes for the wealthy/businesses, or if you allow the wealthy/businesses to take advantage of built-in loopholes, you are not allowing for a level playing field.

I'm not suggesting that we 'take from the rich and give to the poor.' I'm suggesting that in a tiered tax environment, like the one we have (thank you Phanatic), we are dependent on more tax money coming from the upper tiers. The entire fairness of that type of system relies on that concept. Those who can afford to pay more to help the greater good are asked to pay more. If you open loopholes and cut taxes for the top tiers and not for the bottom tiers that balance is thrown off and we no longer have a system that operates the way it is supposed to.

We can argue the merits of that system until we're blue in the face, but it is the one we rely on and it has been thrown wildly out of whack over the last 8 years.

Which brings us to my next point. Scrap the farging IRS and the tax code and start over from scratch. I'm not an economist, but there has to be a better way of collecting taxes than this.

*Edit* Jesus I crammed a lot of typos into this post.

All other words aside, this is where we SHOULD be working our taxation system.  Maybe in 12.  We can dream.

Magical_Retard

this whole argument is fargin retarded. obama is not going to strip rich ppl all of their money. its increasing taxes, and mostly returning to the system under clinton compared to bush. this is idiotic to claim that our PROGRESSIVE TAX system which is based on ppl who make more pay more. and how much more are these ppl looking at paying?

joe the plumber can go to hell...which is basically where he is anyway in OHIO. you don't want someone else hard earned money joe? how about the fact that these so called hard working CEOs are ripping everyone off left and right and only get caked off further due to the tax system? you can honestly differ in economic principles but do not come out and lie and claim to be buying a business when you can not. and the bitch about being questioned on that point when its shown you owe taxes, cant buy the business, and would benefit under obama vs mccain. then claim to be some sort of foreign policy expert, claim obama is a socialist, and spew garbage about the Iraq war.

poor joe now he doesn't want the tough questions. the nervse of this guy to question why he is getting asked the tought questions and obama is not. what questions has obama not dealt with? race? religion? his patriotism? wtf...why is joe even on tv anymore? this moron thinks voting for obama means socialism and the death of Israel. he holds press conferences and publicly endorses mccain and shows up at his rallies. but yeah dont ask him any tough questions or question his own background. what a clown.

as for sanchez this is like the third interview in a row he has owned someone. first was that mccain surrogate who couldn't answer his own accusation that obama has antisemitic friends. the following day was a conservative who claimed rev wright is also antisemitic because he criticized the govt of Israel. sanchez actually schooled him on the difference between disliking the govt of Israel and hating Jewish ppl.

People claiming that someone making 20 grand a year should pay at the same rate as someone making 20 million should be incinerated.  There's a whopping difference between the two.  The rich know it; the poor know it and so do the fargin farged over middle class who subsidize the poor and create wealth for the rich.

Everyone pays the same rate right now.  On the first 20k for example, there is one rate then from 20-50, 50-100 etc., there are increasing "rates" for each bracket.  So the person that makes 20k and the person making 2 million both pay the same amount of taxes on the first 20k.

Jeebus, this looks like an ass-whoopin' if CNN's numbers in Florida and North Carolina are right.
