It absolutely is a religious institution. The lingo has been adopted to have a legal meaning, but marriage is definitely a religious bond. I agree with whoever was saying that the word marriage should legally be replaced by civil union. That would clear all of this shtein up.

It's as religious as not eating pork.  Started that way, has since changed as idiot humans became slightly more enlightened.

I'm just confused on Palin's stance on amending the constitution to ban Gay marriage but provide Civil unions. It's like its war on the usage of a word and not anything substantial. I am, however reminded by some of my more religious colleagues that this probably makes a lot more sense to those of the biblical persuasion. The Bible says it is wrong. End of discussion.

Speaking of Palin...

Interview with KUSA in Colorado

At about 0:40 seconds from the end of the clip

QuoteQ: Brandon Garcia wants to know, "What does the Vice President do?"

PALIN: That's something that Piper would ask me! ... [T]hey're in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom.

There is a specific limited roll of the VP in the Senate and that is to ONLY vote during a tie. Otherwise the VP has no vote at all and they certainly are not 'in-charge'. Maybe she got that from Cheney who wants to say that the VP's office is part of the Legislative branch so he doesn't have to preserve documents... :-\

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

The first person to ever make that argument was Cheney. Now his successor is making the same argument. She definitely consulted him or has been coached on his thoughts on the matter.

i doubt it because she said the same thing shortly after she was nominated and i doubt she had ever even spoken to dick at that point...actually i would be shocked if they even now had ever met

100% guaranteed she's been coached on that whether she's ever actually spoken to Cheney or not.

Gay marriage being recognized by the state would be a great new source of income for lawyers when they all started getting divorced.

I'd bet it would make for some good court tv also. Can you imagine two flamers in a nasty divorce?
