Politics.

"At 8:30 this morning, Senator Obama called Senator McCain to ask him if he would join in issuing a joint statement outlining their shared principles and conditions for the Treasury proposal and urging Congress and the White House to act in a bipartisan manner to pass such a proposal.  At 2:30 this afternoon, Senator McCain returned Senator Obama's call and agreed to join him in issuing such a statement.  The two campaigns are currently working together on the details."

So at 8:30 Obama calls McCain to put out a joint message on the proposal. Then this afternoon McCain announces that he is suspending his campaign and Obama should do the same? Unless I'm reading this wrong it appears that Obama extended an olive branch this morning for the general good, and then McCain agreed but turned around and made a seedy political move out of it this afternoon... please correct me if I'm reading that wrong, but that's pretty farged up.

Unfortunately that is the way I took it. Granted you can't believe everything you read but that makes McCain seem slimy. Not something I would have associated with him.

I don't think McCain is really worried about debating Obama.  The debate is on foreign policy, and McCain's not the one going to debate boot camp all week and having people from his campaign role-play Obama.

Is McCain's move overtly political and decidedly overdone?  Yes.  Is he doing it to avoid debating Obama?  No.

rjs246

He isn't worried about the debate. He's worried about the timing. If he debates Obama in the middle of the stock market getting crushed it won't matter how well he does, he'll come out of it stinking of shtein because people blame his party for the problems. If he waits until a bailout passes through congress and the kneejerk stock market bounce makes everyone breath a sigh of relief he'll be more likely to be viewed in a good light. It's political finagling at its craftiest and it's a huge turnoff.

McCain was giving you a rager before this move, I'm sure.

Not remotely, but I, like others, still remember a very different John McCain and with every passing day he seems to fall further and further into the quagmire of zesty win-at-all-cost political tricks.

I don't think McCain's move is about the debates at all. I think he's just trying to grab some high ground. Despite calling him in the morning and getting his thunder stolen Obama goes the other way.

McCain on Letterman...or not?

This is from Drudge though, so it might be completely fabricated.

That might the best line I've ever read.  The best line I ever heard came from the movie "Showgirls" though, so. . . take it for what it's worth.

Now McCain is saying he won't show! LOL.

Someones scured.

could they be any more obvious? biden doesnt even have to try, this thing is going to be a colossal ass pounding.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Quote"I believe we should continue to have the debate," he just said. "I believe it makes sense for us to present ourselves to the American people."

"Obviously if it turns out that we need to be in Washington, we've both got big planes, we've painted our slogan on the side of them," Obama also said. "They can get us from Washington to Mississippi pretty quickly." The debate is set to take place in Mississippi.

Love it.  I wonder if McCain is a no show, does Obama get a couple of hours of prime time network face time for free?
An ad hominem fallacy consists of asserting that someone's argument is wrong and/or he is wrong to argue at all purely because of something discreditable/not-authoritative about the person or those persons cited by him rather than addressing the soundness of the argument itself.
