perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Also flat earth was a myth though it was attributed to the church. Or that's the theory anyway...

From wiki

QuoteThe modern belief that especially medieval Christianity believed in a flat earth has been referred to as The Myth of the Flat Earth.[1] In 1945, it was listed by the Historical Association (of Britain) as the second of 20 in a pamphlet on common errors in history.[2] Recent scholarship[3] has argued that "with extraordinary [sic] few exceptions no educated person in the history of Western Civilization from the third century B.C. onward believed that the earth was flat" and that the prevailing view was of a spherical earth.[1]

Jeffrey Russell states that the modern view that people of the Middle Ages believed that the Earth was flat is said to have entered the popular imagination in the 19th century, thanks largely to the publication of Washington Irving's fantasy The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1828.[1] Although these writers reject the idea of a flat earth, others such as the Flat Earth Society accept or promote the hypothesis.

Didn't know that.

Uh, dude, the "one nation under God" thing was added in the 1900s.  The founders had absolutely no interest in that, and it should sure as hell be removed.

My point was it's there now, no matter when it was added.  Whether it should or shouldn't be is up for debate, but  the frightened masses saying that church and state are separate need only to refer to this.

I have no problem with exposing kids to religion. Just because you don't subscribe to that belief doesn't mean you should be threatened by it. Teach a world religion class that preaches tolerances and encourages diversity. If you just teach folks about Jesus because we're a Christian nation who's Jesus do you teach? Majority Mob rule?

i completely agree with your sentiment but i do take offense to the notion that tolerance and diversity are somehow linked to only a religion class...it promotes the stereotype that religious people by definition are somehow more righteous...better than everyone else...

i think you can teach those things in any number of classes that DONT include religion...or id be all for requiring kids at a certain grade level to perform X amount of community service and weave the things youre talking about into that...then teach your own children whatever religion you want at home and in church..of course also diversity tolerance ect...

The context of this discussion was religion so my response is framed as such. Certainly diversity isn't limited to just religion. Don't be ridiculous. Being exposed to different religions and what they're about should not offend anyone but I know it will.

right and im saying you dont need religion classes in school to be able to teach those things you speak of...nor should you...it just sounded like trying to find a way to get a religion class in school or that those attributes (diversity/tolerance)... are somehow linked to religion

Phanatic brought up an excellent point.  For those of you that have been arguing against, what is wrong with a World Religion class being taught in public schools?  (Honest question)

My opinion on why it should be taught is a) so much of the world's history is based on religion, and b) understanding different aspects of people's philosophies is important for a well rounded education.

What's wrong with your kids (or kids to be) learning all that?

There's nothing wrong with it and in fact it's a good idea. I have spoken.
