The school district I did all my K-12 through had the highest-paid teachers in Pennsylvania at least 10 of the 13 years I was in school.  A lot of the teachers sucked anyway.  Therefore, rjs is wrong.

Plus, you'll note my absence of logic which makes any sense whatsoever is a product of my overpaid teachers!

But seriously... teachers are generally underpaid and underappreciated, especially in urban areas.  The big issue IMO is that once tenure kicks in, even some of the better-paid teachers really mail it in and don't care.  That said, NONE of them will care if they're all paid dick.

I don't even know which side I'm arguing for.  I'm confused.  Vote Kucinich.

Throwing more money at prospective teachers isn't the answer.

Wrong. I guarantee you that higher salaries will bring more qualified and capable candidates. There's absolutely no reasonable argument for underpaying teachers.

Actually, there's quite an argument against it... it's called HIGHER PROPERTY TAXES.

The solution to a problem such as this can't be found by tossing money at it.  We spend hundreds of billions of dollars each year in public education and a significant percentage of children who attend those schools are illiterate morons.

The fault lies with the parent(s) who either don't give a shtein or are too stupid to involve themselves in their child's education.  We spend at least an hour a night going over homework with our first grader, and if she doesn't have homework, she gets flash cards with spelling, reading or math problems to work on.  When she's tested and brings them home, we go over every problem with her.  If she gets a spelling word wrong, she writes it out 20 times.

I know for a fact that most of the parents at her school do roughly the same with their kids.  It works too.

There were 100 graduating seniors at the local catholic high school last year (Father Lopez).  100% of them got accepted to 4-year universities and almost all of them got some sort of scholarship money.

The teachers are very important, rjs, and they work their farging asses off and deal with a tremendous amount of shtein.  I'm not arguing that.  But what I will argue is that tossing more money at people isn't the answer in this particular case.  Without involved parents, children have less of a chance to take advantage of the education they receive.

Meaning that going to school and getting a masters in education, a farging MASTERS, garners you less than $50,000 per year when you're done. Pathetic.
My wife is a Special Ed teacher who will have completed her masters in January.  She gets paid Jackshtein for the crap that she deals with.  Pay the teachers, get rid of the crap teachers.  Another thing, GW Bush has a completely unrealistic view from the teachers standpoint with the "No child left behind"  in MD they have inclusive classrooms that means you have children who are severely autistic/downs with regular education classes.  In W's plan those kids have the same goals as regular ed kids.

At Rome:

You can't govern parenthood. It's great to stand around saying that it's the parents' fault, and you won't get any agruments from me about that. Parents, for the most part, are idiots, and they raise idiot children. But there's nothing that the government can do about it.

I'm talking about things that the government CAN do something about. Telling people how to parent their children isn't something the government has any power or ability to do. Paying teachers more for the jobs that they do and putting a bigger societal importance on teaching as a profession, is something the goverment absolutely CAN do.

I've yet to talk to a teacher that thinks "No child left behind" makes any sense whatsoever.

Rome

I'm all for paying teachers more.  I just want to do so in a way that is fiscally responsible, that's all.  In Floriduh, it's all about test results (FCAT's).  They actually teach children to pass tests, not think critically and LEARN.  To me, that's ever-loving bullshtein and it's the main reason my child goes to a parochial school and not a public one.

And I know it's silly to expect parents to actually concern themselves in their children's lives, but if more parents got involved there'd be significantly less illiteracy in this country.  In fact, parental involvement is the key to solving  most problems facing children, but no one seems to want to acknowledge that on a national level.  Just once I'd like to hear a politician stand up and tell it like it is where education's concerned.

But there are too many votes to be had by simply accepting the status quo and allowing the charade of public education to continue.

And NCLB is a farging idiotic premise and program.  You can't expect excellence or even competency from 100% of the population.  It's unrealistic and it does more to harm kids than anything else.

rjs246

You can stand on your soapbox all you want, and yes parents should be called out for slacking on their jobs (Andy Reid), but you can't create laws forcing parents to read to their kids or help them with their homework. It just isn't feasible. So do what you can.

Same thing in MD Rome, and on top of teaching the test, they make kids who have severe mental disabilities take the same test.  Explain to me how that is even relavent to a kid who doesnt even know their own name?

You talking about only Teaching the Test is another reason The Wire was so great last season.

Paying teachers more for the jobs that they do

paying teachers more will do nothing in schools that DONT HAVE ENOUGH TEXTBOOKS FOR THE CHILDREN....make the neighborhoods where these schools reside liveable make the schools a place where learning is possible....then get better people to teach....but that wont happen because the govt wants blacks to fail....it wants blacks to die...

its the reason they werent allowed to even vote 40 years ago...same reason they try to keep them from the polls now...they dont want educated blacks...they dont want blacks having power....this country is run by old white men and best believe they arent going to allow that to change anytime soon

think...before typing

it looks as though there is an application process to get into this school...

which only means that the 100% higher edu rate is based on the schools pre-screening of students, and not a sample of general population.

Using a private school to support a public referendum is not going to produce accurate results.

A "conservative" imposed a big government program on your local school system and now we have a bureaucratic mess that requires mentally challenged kids to test along with regular kids having the test scores count against the school?

That's not possible. Conservatives aren't for big gubement

I already showed that the problems Blacks and other inner-city groups are facing now have nothing to do with their skin color. But IGY believes that the government wants them to fail. Completely idiotic.

This is the first time in the history of human society that poor people have been treated badly and it's all because they're black!

ice grillin you

its 100% true

it might make you uncomfortable to admit that your governtment purposely holds back select groups of individuals but its true

why do more jails get built than schools....whos fills those jails....poor people?.....white people?....poor white people???

why are blacks over ten times more likely to be poor than whites....where are the poor inner cities filled with millions of white people??...they dont exist...if blacks get money then they get educated then they get power...your govt is not going to let that happen...belee dat

i forgot tho blacks wanna kill each other...black are growing poppy fields and bringing coke into the inner city...blacks dont want good schools for their children...and they like to only eat food that gives them cancer and heart disease...because blacks are animals...they are subhuman and inferior to whites...they deserve what they get...and whatever happens to them is fine so be it that it happens where it doesnt bother us...where it doesnt make cnn....confine them to small sections of third world country condition neighborhoods and let them at it

let a school in a white neighborhhood have some chipped paint in one of the classrooms and they rebuild it...but let a white teen from the burbs die of an oxy overdose and all of sudden its a national epidemic and we MUST stop our kids from dying......

stock brokers on wall street do all the coke in peru catch one and he gets probation...but arrest a black kid in red hook with a crack rock and he gets a mandatory 10 years in comstock...thats why crack gets you more years than any other drug ever known to man...because its an urban drug
