the left need someone with bernies policy beliefs but in a better package

hillary is a waste of life....a worse version of bill

Yet you'll still vote for her so stop your farging bellyaching.

That goes for the rest of you dumbasses.

If you want Bernie's policies you don't need a better package. What you need is decades of slowly moving 65% of the country away from the idea that conservative orthodoxy is the key to the country's success. If you think his policies have a frozen snatch hair's chance in hell of being successfully passed into law or implemented in today's America, land of the tea party and Rick Scott and Texas and Mississippi, you are farging delusional.

At least 50% of the people in this country HATE socialism.  I mean hate it to the point where they would sooner die than live under socialist rule.  You know, because socialism is BAD!

Nevermind the fact that we've lived in a socialist state for 75 years (Social Security - see - it's right there in the title!, Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, Food Stamps, etc) and further nevermind that the states where citizens decry it most actually receive per capita more benefits than others.  Nope!  Socialism is the Devil's work.

Sarcasm aside, there's no way a guy like Bernie Sanders is ever going to be President.   If the Democrats are suicidal enough to nominate him, you may as well go ahead and start researching places to live as expats and pray those countries don't boot your asses out when the shtein hits the fan.

rjs246

Bernie's run is fantastic from a big picture perspective. His views and policy positions have not even been part of the serious political conversation in this country for a very long time. But his serious campaign is the first step in a long process. This country cannot go from Reagan Bush Clinton Bush Obama, all of whom are essentially economic conservatives, to Bernie farging Sanders. European style democratic socialism is not in our immediate future. Sorry, true believers.

Give it twenty years or so and there will be very few democrats afraid of being called a socialist. Of course, in twenty years there might be just a handful of people left wandering the ruins of America siphoning gas from old wrecks to keep their generators running for another day, but still.

The man. The myth. The legend.

I switched back to Democrat so I could vote for Hillary in the primary.  Even in deep blue MD I think the Bernie Sanders fantasy has gone too goddamn far, and it's time to wake up and vote Clinton.  Like her or not she is the only hope we have to prevent the Republicans from controlling the entire farging government.

Trump is an American Putin.  Cruz is an American Ayatollah.  Kasich is a modern Reagan.

Hillary is a Clinton, and that's pretty goddamn good by comparison.

Most of my friends are for Bernie, and they are horrified by my position.

This is me exactly.

I guess this is sort of me. The only reason to vote for her is to keep the gop slop out of the WH.  Guess I'm just holding out hope for Bernie until he's officially out.

rjs246

In my opinion a Bernie Sanders presidency would set the liberal cause back by decades. He would be elected with grand ideas into a divided government and an opposition that has spent 8 years practicing obstructionism. He is unqualified to be commander in chief of the military and his economic plans don't even pass muster with liberal economists. He would get NOTHING from his agenda passed. Literally nothing. He would look like a kook and his brand of liberalism would be snuffed out all over again.

This country is in no way structured or prepared for a Bernie Sanders presidency in 2016. But by all means, keep holding out hope.

I don't disagree with that, but I don't care. I like him.  I think he's one of the most authentic politician I've ever seen.  He's the only candidate, as far as I know, who was on the front lines during the Civil Rights Movement.  So yeah, I'm gonna hold out hope that the guy somehow pulls this out.

And actually, I do disagree with him not being qualified to be Commander in Chief. How is he any less qualified than Hillary (who you'll vote for) or Barry (who I believe you voted for) or Clinton (who you probably would have voted for in 93 if you were old enough)?

rjs246

You're saying he's just as qualified as a former Secretary of State? No.

But more to the point, imagine for a second that we're talking about modern American politics. Now imagine a president who wants to slash defense spending by 75-80% to pay for expanded social services and debt forgiveness. The opposition would have a field day making him look unqualified. It wouldn't even be difficult because every general, officer and enlisted man would support them as their jobs would be on the line.

So fine, maybe he is no less qualified than Bill or Barry were but his policy positions mean that he would have Zero support in that role from the people that he needs to make him legitimate. And arguing that he is unqualified would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

It was '92, fool. And I'd be shocked if rjs didn't vote for H. Ross Perot.

Why can't we get a President who cuts the military budget so we're only number one in spending by a little bit?

rjs246

We cannot cut 75% of our military budget without throwing the world order into disarray. I would love to slash military spending by half. Love it. Budget and deficit problems would disappear immediately. But that is not a realistic possibility. Gradual, meaningful cuts may be possible. Giant jarring cuts will never happen and if they did it would destabilize the entire way the world deals with military issues.

True, except that he's spewing authentic hate. Not to mention that there are countless interviews with him in the past where he totally contradicts his current position.

ice grillin you

its hilarious to me how republicans abhor welfare programs but talk about cutting military spending which is by far the biggest welfare program in the history of the world and you are an un-american traitor
