QuoteMcCain for President

By Charles Krauthammer
Friday, October 24, 2008; A19

Contrarian that I am, I'm voting for John McCain. I'm not talking about bucking the polls or the media consensus that it's over before it's over. I'm talking about bucking the rush of wet-fingered conservatives leaping to Barack Obama before they're left out in the cold without a single state dinner for the next four years.

I stand athwart the rush of conservative ship-jumpers of every stripe -- neo (Ken Adelman), moderate (Colin Powell), genetic/ironic (Christopher Buckley) and socialist/atheist (Christopher Hitchens) -- yelling "Stop!" I shall have no part of this motley crew. I will go down with the McCain ship. I'd rather lose an election than lose my bearings.

First, I'll have no truck with the phony case ginned up to rationalize voting for the most liberal and inexperienced presidential nominee in living memory. The "erratic" temperament issue, for example. As if McCain's risky and unsuccessful but in no way irrational attempt to tactically maneuver his way through the economic tsunami that came crashing down a month ago renders unfit for office a man who demonstrated the most admirable equanimity and courage in the face of unimaginable pressures as a prisoner of war, and who later steadily navigated innumerable challenges and setbacks, not the least of which was the collapse of his campaign just a year ago.

McCain the "erratic" is a cheap Obama talking point. The 40-year record testifies to McCain the stalwart.

Nor will I countenance the "dirty campaign" pretense. The double standard here is stunning. Obama ran a scurrilous Spanish-language ad falsely associating McCain with anti-Hispanic slurs. Another ad falsely claimed that McCain supports "cutting Social Security benefits in half." And for months Democrats insisted that McCain sought 100 years of war in Iraq.

McCain's critics are offended that he raised the issue of William Ayers. What's astonishing is that Obama was himself not offended by William Ayers.

Moreover, the most remarkable of all tactical choices of this election season is the attack that never was. Out of extreme (and unnecessary) conscientiousness, McCain refused to raise the legitimate issue of Obama's most egregious association -- with the race-baiting Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Dirty campaigning, indeed.

The case for McCain is straightforward. The financial crisis has made us forget, or just blindly deny, how dangerous the world out there is. We have a generations-long struggle with Islamic jihadism. An apocalyptic soon-to-be-nuclear Iran. A nuclear-armed Pakistan in danger of fragmentation. A rising Russia pushing the limits of revanchism. Plus the sure-to-come Falklands-like surprise popping out of nowhere.

Who do you want answering that phone at 3 a.m.? A man who's been cramming on these issues for the past year, who's never had to make an executive decision affecting so much as a city, let alone the world? A foreign policy novice instinctively inclined to the flabbiest, most vaporous multilateralism (e.g., the Berlin Wall came down because of "a world that stands as one"), and who refers to the most deliberate act of war since Pearl Harbor as "the tragedy of 9/11," a term more appropriate for a bus accident?

Or do you want a man who is the most prepared, most knowledgeable, most serious foreign policy thinker in the United States Senate? A man who not only has the best instincts but has the honor and the courage to, yes, put country first, as when he carried the lonely fight for the surge that turned Iraq from catastrophic defeat into achievable strategic victory?

There's just no comparison. Obama's own running mate warned this week that Obama's youth and inexperience will invite a crisis -- indeed a crisis "generated" precisely to test him. Can you be serious about national security and vote on Nov. 4 to invite that test?

And how will he pass it? Well, how has he fared on the only two significant foreign policy tests he has faced since he's been in the Senate? The first was the surge. Obama failed spectacularly. He not only opposed it. He tried to destilupfrontate it, stop it and, finally, deny its success.

The second test was Georgia, to which Obama responded instinctively with evenhanded moral equivalence, urging restraint on both sides. McCain did not have to consult his advisers to instantly identify the aggressor.

Today's economic crisis, like every other in our history, will in time pass. But the barbarians will still be at the gates. Whom do you want on the parapet? I'm for the guy who can tell the lion from the lamb.

can someone explain to me what wright said that was so treasonous? im being serious here. the recording of his speech that i heard was him claiming the US brought a lot of what has happened on itself and then he went into some super priest mode ranting "GOD DAMN THIS NATION".

how is that so offensive? the US did bring a lot of this on its own because of decades of terrible foreign policy. but even if that is debatable/arguable how is this association so dangerous? its like saying if you go to church you MUST agree to 100% of everything the priest says even if its political commentary or 0% of it. why the extremes?

and hasnt mccain been linked to crazy priests himself? hasnt every republican candidate pretty much?

the ayers topic has been discussed to death and im convinced at this point even mccain doesnt really buy it as a reasonable "attack". mccan raises the question. obama answers it. mccain keeps repeating obama never answered it. obama answers it again. mccain still claims we dont know the truth about the relationship. well if you know the truth which obama is not sharing then tell us or shut up already. at this point its "say it enough so the ppl in my base and hopefully some independents start believing its the truth".

as for mccain and his associations how many times has obama brought up the keating 5? or gordan liddy? in fact i dont see anyone in the media bring it up at all. the only person i ever saw question mccain about liddy was letterman.

face it all these politicians know some shady characters. they always do. when was the last time you voted for a candidate who was perfectly clean?

and oh yeah that girl who supposedly was robbed and then branded a B cause she is a mccain supporter....seems even faker now that i have seen the picture and she has a backwards B on the face.

stupid girl at least if your going to fake a event brand yourself with the letter "O" so you cant mess it up backwards or upside down.

Just to touch on this portion, there is a difference between an association, being linked, and having the man marry you and perform baptisms on your children.  And quite a difference when you consider that Wright served as both a role model and a spiritual mentor for Obama, including having Obama check with Wright prior to making any bold political moves. As a general rule I ignore all personal attacks and attacks by association as there's no way to prove things like that and it's easy to manufacture. Not to mention I know some pretty shady folks whom I call friends that I don't agree with on a lot of things. I also don't care about moral indiscretions. If they're wanting the job they're class A personalities and are all messed up just to be in the position to get elected.

I try and focus on the issues and make up my mind from there.

Ayers was an old extremist hippy from the 60's who's president of a college and he served on a charitable board with him. So what?

His priest was really cool but kind of like a crazy uncle.

I'd hang out and easily befriend Ted Nugent despite the fact that he's crazy as a loon. These are real people. What will they do once elected? That's my focus.

I support Obama. I try to talk about issues when I'm not making fun of you idiots. STOP PIGEON HOLING ME.

It seems that the closer we get to the election, there's more and more for you to make fun of. There's more than a few posts that don't exactly meet the already low standards for what passes as friendly discussion around here. You know, telling someone you're going to rape their mother, hoping their children die, that kind of friendly banter we've come to know and love.

If people can't be as eloquent as that with their posts here, perhaps we need a raving lunatic member group to put people in so they don't interfere with the normal political discourse here in the general forum. Ooh, I can pull an Art and make the offenders write essays to get back in! This is gonna be so awesome.

QuotePalin calls herself a frugal shopper when at home
WASHINGTON – Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, on whom the GOP has lavished $150,000 for designer clothes and beauty services, says her family shops frugally back home in Alaska and her favorite store is a consignment shop.

Purchases by the Republican National Committee at high-end department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus appeared in spending reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. They offered a stark contrast to Palin's image as a "hockey mom" who calls herself part of an average, middle-class American family.

"Those clothes are not my property. We had three days of using clothes that the RNC purchased," Palin told Fox News in an interview that aired Thursday night.

"If people knew how Todd and I and our kids shop so frugally. My favorite shop is a consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska, called Out of the Closet. And my shoe store is called Shoe Fly in Juneau, Alaska. ... It's not, you know, Fifth Avenue-type of shopping."

In one shopping spree for Palin, the RNC spent $75,062 at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis. It also spent $49,425 at Saks Fifth Avenue and $4,902 at Atelier, a stylish men's store, and paid $92 for a romper and matching hat with ears for her infant son, Trig, at Pacifier, a Minneapolis baby store.

The McCain campaign reported paying $13,200 in September to celebrity makeup artist Amy Strozzi, who works on the reality show "So You Think You Can Dance." She was paid $22,800 for the first two weeks of October, nearly double what the campaign paid McCain's foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, according to a filing report.

Palin said the clothing purchased by the RNC would be returned or donated to charities.

As if this were to happen that Biden wouldn't win in a landslide. Or, as if McCain were to win in this manner there would be any country left for him to govern.

Speaking for myself, I have made note of "non-issues" when they exist in stark contrast to the accusations made by McCain and the Republican party.

Obama's pastor thinks the US instigated the terrorist attacks - Palin accepted the blessings of a witch hunter
Obama is an elitist - McCain has 7 houses, Palin spends 150k on clothes?
Obama is inexperienced - And Palin is experienced at what?
Obama's wife hasn't always been proud to be an American - And Todd Palin was a member of a secessionist party?
Obama "pals around with terrrorists" - McCain pals around with G. Gordon Liddy and Palin refuses to call those who bomb abortion clinics terrorists

So, to those McCain supporters who claim to focus on the issues: What would make McCain a good president?

McCain would redistribute wealth to the wealthiest 5% and businesses.
McCain would increase the cost of employers providing health insurance (by taxing it) and give tax credits that would pay less than half of the average cost of family health coverage.
McCain has demonstrated support for an adversarial approach to foreign policy that has the US pouring resources into two wars and has the country at odds with many of its former allies.
McCain stakes his claim as a "Maverick" on his opposition to earmarks but sees no conflict of interest in taking political action which returns orders of magnitude more money to corporations.
McCain has significant health issues which call into question if he'll be able to complete even one term, yet his VP candidate is one of the least qualified in history - even according to members of his own party.

Without talking about Obama, can you make a case for McCain?
An ad hominem fallacy consists of asserting that someone's argument is wrong and/or he is wrong to argue at all purely because of something discreditable/not-authoritative about the person or those persons cited by him rather than addressing the soundness of the argument itself.

cant have it both ways. cant make fun of edwards constantly for his fruity 400 dollar hair cut and complain how he does not connect with real and then say its nothing for palin to spend 150k when her whole appeal has been down to earth family next door.

it should not really be a issue but the whole mccain campaign has been slogans and catch phrases. this example just proves how out of touch with reality she really is.
