The primary job of historians is to shine the light of truth on our past.  To tell the whole truth - the incredible highs, and the crushing lows - of the American story.

The primary job of history teachers is to pass on that truth to the next generation.  To give the story - the promises of the Declaration of Independence, as well as the flagrant violations of that promises by both the founding generation and those that have followed.

Only in doing both of these will we raise citizens that will fight to hold our government and our society to the promises of the Declaration.  Any less is inexcusable.
