You're right, she's too precious to serve, too important to be asked to sacrifice any of her comfort, labor, or time.  Let her be excused.

Everyone else, including my kids, should be require to serve either in one of the military branches, the peace corps, or in some kind of CCC-like domestic service organization.  We have any number of needs that could be served by a standing force of young people between the ages of 18 and 22 or so.   And we have a terrible need for the young people of our society to sacrifice and work for the benefit of others/society writ large. 

I'd love to see a national requirement for service, have a whole range of branches kids can enlist through, depending on their interests and abilities

Military
Peace Corps
CCC - building things in parks, planting trees, cleaning up waterways, etc.
AmeriCorps - human service focused stuff, like tutoring kids, operating afterschool programs, attending to elderly in homes, etc.
Urban CCC - like the above, but focused on city infrastructure, parks, rehabilitation of abandoned housing, etc.
Maybe a junior branch of some kind of emergency services kind of thing, focussed on  supporting disaster relief services, which need lots of labor.

possibilities are pretty wide open...and I'm not kidding.  It would be a huge boon to our Republic if everyone was required to take part, to actually serve it, instead of just those who few volunteers who now do so

I never said you did.  I get what you're suggesting, Dio.  I agree with the notion of voluntary service but conscription is out as far as I'm concerned. 

As for mine, if she chooses to join the Peace Corps or whatever, I'd be proud of her and support her but I will not allow her to be used as fodder for the machine.
