I was chastised by someone this morning for thanking a veteran for her service.  I was told it's not Veterans Day, it's Memorial Day and it's not appropriate to do what I did.

I replied, "every day is appropriate to thank those who put on a uniform and served our country."

So in that spirit, thanks to everyone here who chose to serve us in the military, even snowflakes like me who don't know the difference between Veterans & Memorial Days.

When you thank a breathing veteran on Memorial Day, while perfectly well intended, it is taking away focus from the group of people that the day is specifically intended for.  And while you might not see it that way, that's the way that any veteran sees it.  Today is not about the living.  It's about the dead.  More pointedly, I've lost 3 buddies and numerous acquaintances in Iraq and Afghanistan, so when people "thank me" today I tend to get a bit angry.  I'm still here.  It's not about me and throwing any type of thanks or warm wishes in my direction is a god damn insult to my brothers and sisters that never came home.

I've never mentioned this publicly because it's really no one's business but my family's but here's a little tidbit about my life:

My father served in Korea.  He was with the Army Corps of Engineers.  He then spent several years in the Nevada desert doing "weather" studies.  He died in 1973 after cancer ate his farging ass to the bone.  He was one of those soldiers who were  * told * that the bomb was safe and radiation wasn't so bad.  He gave his life for this country even though it took 15 years for the bill to come due.

I'm pretty sure I can say thanks to anyone I want and if someone gets offended by it, I can simply relay the story I just told here.  If they're still offended I can say go farg yourself.  This country killed my Dad.  I grew up without him because politicians and his genius superiors treated him worse than the livestock they stuck in pens to be cooked alive when the bombs were detonated.

And I truly thank you for your service, Sassy, and I respectfully thank those who gave their lives for their country.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do, just giving you a vet's perspective of what many of us feel when people thank us for serving....on Memorial Day.  If you want to keep on doing what you're doing, it makes me no never mind.

Though I will point out that it's pretty ridiculous to want to thank someone for their service and then tell them to farg off if they take offense to it.  Perhaps a happy medium would be that if you feel compelled to thank a soldier or vet on Memorial Day, preface it by acknowledging that it's Memorial Day but that you'd also like to extend your gratitude to him/her. Maybe you already do this.  I dunno.  If so, then carry on.  If not, maybe just adjust fire a little bit and make sure that you're including the fallen soldiers.

Sorry to hear what happened to your pop.  That farging blows dude.  And I'm willing to bet that the gov't/VA wasn't offering any support for that either.

I didn't even realize that entire countries had a twitter page.  Even more surprised that the Ukraine tweets in English.
