I'd be willing to bet it doesn't even equal a tenth of a percent. I mean no offense to veterans, but why do we have to spend so much on the military.

This country spends $600 BILLION per year on defense.  You could reduce that by 50% and we'd still spend about the same as the next 2 countries combined (China: $215B, Saudi Arabia: $87B)

Thing is, cutting the defense budget doesn't mean that you have to downsize the military and put even more people in the unemployment line, it just means that you don't spend as much money trying to develop more crazy ass weapons of mass destruction and failed fighter jets. 

It also means eliminating the national debt in a matter of years. And the end to talks of ending the social safety net. So in other words it will never happen.

Of course it will never happen.  People in this country have star spangled boners for war.  I don't think there's ever been any substantial cuts in military spending over the last 100 years...or maybe ever...unless you want to include post-war downsizing, which isn't a spending cut as much as it's just the DoD getting back to it's pre-war manpower numbers.
