Butchers Bill

I believe I've passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage
I found that just surviving was a noble fight.
I once believed in causes too,
I had my pointless point of view,
And life went on no matter who was wrong or right.

As Americans we need to stop this childish, imbecilic rhetoric and focus on what we agree on, rather than what we don't.
what we need is another 20 years for old white men to die off and start moving this country forward in the way it deserves

You do realize that this is every bit as racist as anything Trump says, right?

And, Butchers Bill is exactly right.

He keeps comparing Trump and Clinton as if they were different sides of the same coin.  They're not.  Hillary has her issues to be sure but comparing her in any way to Trump is a deal breaker for me.  I see it all the time on social media and it's absolutely idiotic.

Oh, and Trump's followers ARE deplorable.  How can you agree with the shtein that spews out of his hole much less go to a rally and cheer it on?  How the farg can you keep those signs in your yard or not take a razor and shave that bumper sticker off your F-150 after the vile shtein he's said?  The answer is you won't because you're just as big of a clueless racist icehole as Trump is.  That's what lies at the dark heart of white America.  It's right there in the open now; that cavernous erupted boil for the world to see and shriek from.

I want nothing to do with that America.  I'm embarrassed to the point of having to instinctively apologize to my friends from abroad whenever I speak to them or chat with them on the web.

But it's not, and no, he isn't.

It is not "just as racist" to observe that old white racists dying off naturally is good, as it is to declare all mexicans rapists, or that an American federal judge can't do his job because of his ethnic heritage.

If our hyperbolic friend were calling for old white racists to be rounded up, put on lists, and monitored...then we're in the same ballpark.

Exactly.  Neanderthals slowly dying off while clinging to their ignorance with a gun in one hand and a bible in the other is progress.

I'm actually more upset at the number of millenials who are supporting that imbecile.

I'd like to comment on something Bill said, about common ground.

What common ground do I have with Trump folks?

How much more fundamental can a disagreement be than one between people who believe in facts, and those who don't?

for example:

They think climate change is a hoax, some kind of liberal conspiracy.  This is lunacy.  It's akin to aleging that the world is flat, or dinosaurs and men cavorted together with Jesus in petting zoos.   These folks aren't just ignorant, they are anti-science.    What common ground am I to find with people who think the scientific method is a sham?

They think Obama wasn't born in the United States, and god forbit, Muslim.  False.  How do you find common ground with someone who won't acknowledge fact?

Trump and his ilk believe the United States is a "judeo-christian" nation.  This is false.  The government is secular, was designed to be.  That is was founded by Westerners, or that many of them were Christians, does not mean this is a Christian country.  No religion stands above any other here, by law.  There is no religious test--despite Trump and his Klan's wish to have one--in the United States.  What do I have in common with someone who thinks America is for the Bible and not the Koran, for the church goers and not the atheists?

Trump and his folks credit any number of lies which are easily proveable, from muslims dancing in the streets of New Jersey on 9/11 to claiming that the entire U.S. election system is rigged.

Frankly, I think there is no common ground, past we all shtein.  How am I to find common ground with people who do not believe in facts?  Where do you start?

Small?  You start small?  Okay...there's a litter problem in Baltimore, what should we do, what would that discussion look like?  Just like every other that you attempt with these folks"

Common cause:  we agree that litter is a problem in Baltimore

Us: Investigate the problem, learn some facts, develop some strategies with experts and citizens working together, make a plan, fund it, implement it, study results, etc.

Them:  Waste of money, we all know that the litter comes from the poor neighborhoods.  It's mostly the poor blacks who do all the littering, it's just true, all you have to do is look around.  Saw one just the other day.  Enforce the laws we have.  Go into those areas and monitor people and arrest them, throw the book at them.

Us:  *sigh*  Okay, I think we can all go now.

Sorry bro, but I think Trump and his crowd ARE deplorable.  They are not redeemable.  He is a modern George Wallace and his ilk are a grave, even existential threat to liberal democracy.  I don't have common ground with them.

I will respectfully disagree, Dio. As far as IGY, he has said more than once on this board alone - and I quote directly - "I hate white people." Waiting for older white people to die off is not a matter of simply "observing." Much of racism is expressed in innuendo and therefore must be inferred from its context and related past expressions. Believe me, if Trump had said "I hate black people" it would be as egregious as anything he has said to date.

As far as common ground, BB is correct. It is a basic core tenet of mediation and conflict resolution to find the common ground between disputants, which is virtually always present though often the disputants can not see it. Whether conflicts with labor/management, peace making in Northern Ireland, hostage release or landlord/tenant disagreement, finding common ground is an integral part of the process and often an essential one. Today our government is so locked into knee jerk disagreement and petty feuding that it has replaced the responsibilities of governance (and Trump has become a personification of this collective blight). This has been fed and sustained by people in general to follow in tow with like attitude, conditioned to demonize the other side with little regard for truth or the common good (though of course will be painfully obvious when looking at the other side but will be blind to oneself).
