Advocating for the punishment of women who have abortions, legal or not, is exactly the sort of insanity that most people would just hear and say, what an icehole.    But this is going to get traction.  It's not just another offhanded idiotic remark.  He's talking about criminalizing women for their reproductive choices and although women actually vote for iceholes like this cretin, most won't and most will actively campaign against him now.
