What's wrong with them is that congress inserts them without attribution, so you don't know who sponsored it.  No transparency at all, and so no accountablity.  Making matters worse, they are often put in at the last moment before the vote, so they cannot be debated removed or hell, even read, before a vote on a much larger package which must go forward.

I don't have a problem with earmarks outside of how they are gamed.

The outcry over earmarks is absolutely ridiculous.  Earmarks don't necessarily equal wasteful spending any more than good legislation equals bad.

exactly...in the dc burbs of maryland there is an intercounty highway being built...i wont bore anyone with the names of the roads cities and counties its connecting as it wont mean anything to anyone not from there but suffice it to say that it has been in the works for over 30 years and most studies say that it is going to alleviate a ton of traffic congestion and is sorely needed

anyway my point it that it is getting federal money for help in its construction...this federal money would be considered an earmark

I agree that the method is broken but government itself is broken as well.  Hell, how many trillions of dollars have been wasted on defense spending debacles or covert ops that no one outside of Washington even has knowledge of?

forget covert stuff...bush publically  lied about a war that is going to end up costing us in the trillions...not to mention the tens of billions of that money that has been stolen or disappeared in the hands of shady contractors...yet these idiots are bitching about obama not vetoing a bill that had 7 billion in earmarks

simply amazing

Good Lord, who is defending Bush and his actions? Bush lied publicly about the war so did Repubs and Dems in voting for it and pushing it. The New President has promised change, I don't give a shtein if its a small amount of the bill (which I already admitted to earlier) He said it would end and gave a lame ass excuse, then signed the bill. You can piss all you want about repubs loving Pork/earmarks and piss about what Bush did. The fact is that there is a new president that said he was going to "change" the way  things are done. No matter how small this is, it's not change it's the same old shtein. Also if the current administration can show some fargin backbone, nail Bush and his crew to the cross for all I care. They farged this country up, so farg them.

it has nothing to with bush...it has everything to do with your incessant whining about trivial things having to do with obama...bush just puts your tears in context

At some point Obama actually will be allowed to accept blame for irresponsible fiscal policy.  He has to be more than an improvement over an irresponsible President like Bush.  He has to actually try to get the country to a place where more money is being collected than spent.

No one expects it to happen overnight.  IGY's viewpoint is extremely reasonable on this: It's disappointing but it's not a big deal.

QuoteYou did not find that funny at all, it should be turned into a SNL skit.

I agree its not a huge deal, I found it laughable the way it played out.

Really? then why do you ramble on comparing it to what Bush did.

My incessant whining? I've probably posted in this thread 10 times in the past two weeks.  :-D

QuoteHe ran part of his campaign on changing D.C.  to stand up there, rail against earmarks and then sign it is laughable.

I believe he's being honest. You must believe he's being insincere. Again, we'll see.

Expecting Obama to correct the mistakes of the past eight years 50 days into his first administration is what's laughable, especially with the special interests that are aligned against him.

:-D mistakes of the past 8 years in 50 days? No. This one would have been an easy slam dunk.
