theres def gotta be ciders stronger than the 5% range.....theoretically you can make it as strong as you want....i suspect they dont go real high because then it becomes a wine or at least starts to resemble a wine like taste and then its like whats the point of making a cider if you are going to go there

Over the holidays I had....

Twin Lakes Jubilicious
Anchor Christmas Ale
Goose Island Christmas Ale
Harpoon Winter Warmer
Breckenridge Christmas Ale

All goddamn delicious. I think the Harpoon might have been my favorite.....but the Breckenridge was really good as well.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

PhillyPhanInDC

I had about two gallons of Young's Double Chocolate over Christmas.

Nummy

Pretzels go with beer. Chocolate goes with pretzels. It should work.

Not really a chocolate beer, but you can definitely detect notes of it, along with coffee and occasionally toffee.

It's the farging business.

It comes in bottles generally. Never seen the cans in person.

I've had Rouge's double chocolate stout before...it was just a little too much for me. I'm not a fan of coffee flavored shtein so stouts aren't my thing

What do you folks think about hard ciders?  I've been padding the revenue stream for Angry Orchard lately.  I prefer their "traditional dry" to their other marques.  I've also tried the woodchuck amber, their original, and it's comparable (though a tad weaker at 5% vs. 5.5%).  I also had the woodchuck pear cider...at 4% it's like drinking soda, and it's way too sweet for me.

Does anyone know of a cider that breaks the 5.5% ABV?

Strongbow is 5%. Pretty sure the kind I was drinking in Australia in 98' was 8%. Not really into sweet tasting alcoholic beverages but Strongbow isn't half bad.

Young's Double Chocolate is farging delicious.  And it doesn't taste like a Hershey bar either.   Just a hint of it.

I'd bet you have no idea what you are talking about. I'd also bet that everyone here already knows that.

I've had the Strongbow as well.  It's alright, nothing special.  I certainly preferred it over the Pear Woodchuck.

so far:

Angry Orchard "Traditional Dry"
Woodchuck "Amber"
Angry Orchard "Crisp Apple"
Strongbow
Woodchuck Pear

Next time I buy cider I'll get the big Euro brand Magner's and see how that is.

Jack's is made near Gettysburg, and they offer a nice, refreshing cider variety. I had the Doc's at a brew fest this summer, and I liked it a lot.
