i have a good friend who just got back from guatamala and brought this big bottle of mezcal which we're supposed to open at some point this weekend.  never had it before.

Mezcal and tequila are extremely similar in taste as far as I'm concerned, but tequila is a little better. You'll never find a worm in the bottom of the bottle of tequila; only Mezcal. They're both made from the agave plant, but use a different distilling process.

Went to Total Wine the other day and built my own 6 pack of beers I never tried. Yuengling Porter is blah, just get Yuengling. Magic Hat Circus Boy is also meh, I've had better girl beers.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

I just spent 3 months in Oaxaca, MX, the home of Mescal. I probably tried 60 different kinds. (Went on a tour of these little places in the country and went to a tasting festival).

This is what I learned:
The worm is only for tourist-made bottles. Was made up as a marketing gimmick in the 20th century.
Mescal from outside of Oaxaca is shtein. I tried it in Veracruz and Jalisco, and I have had that shtein they sell in the yellow bottles near the border. Tastes like cheap tequila run through an engine block.
Like all booze, good shtein is good and bad shtein is bad, but if it is not from Oaxaca, it is probably bad.
The main difference between tequila and mezcal is that there is more of a smoke flavor in some mezcal, I would compare it to the difference between scotch and irish whiskey.
The best part about it is this chile-worm-salt that they dip orange slices into drink it with, I brought home a bunch.
Also, they traditionally slug it out of these half-gourds, which must have like 8 ounces in them. Those country fools can really put it down.
Also, $1.10 for all you can drink of 50 different mezcal's, with vendors selling goat meat BBQ tacos is the best $1.10 that was ever spent.

Got an e-mail from the Troegs brewery manager, asking to use one of my photos for their marketing/website. Sensing an opportunity, I offered it to them for two cases of beer. They not only agreed, but upped the offer.

As of lunch time, in my car there is a case of Scratch #22, a case of Scratch #23, a 22oz bottle of Mad Elf, and a 22oz bottle of Java Head. Oh, and I got a couple of free tastes (Java Head and Dead Reckoning) while I was there. Life is good.

I did offer to take more, but he didn't respond to that. I'll just have to take some good ones, and see if he'll continue the arrangement.
