Yeah, the Eagles are good at using the tag and having no hard feelings.

So, you want the Eagles to set aside top 10 or top 5 corner money for Hood? :sly

Out of respect for our new signee, the title of this topic should be changed*.

Oh, and did anyone note that Dexter Wynn was released to make this signing happen?

Yay for a healthy dose of Reno through season end!

QuoteThe addition of William James is one of those signings that, in different circumstances, would make you stand up and say, "YES! The Eagles just gave themselves a boost that shows how smart this front office really is."

I believe that is how much adding James can mean to this defense. It's a reason I'm still so high on this team, on this organization, on the vision here and on the confidence I have that the second half of the year will be so much better than the first half.

I realize there are many issues to solve here. I realize adding James, a starting-quality cornerback when he is healthy -- and the Eagles are convinced he is healthy -- doesn't mean the Eagles will stop the run more effectively on defense, or control the line of scrimmage and the ball offensively, or make field position-changing plays on special teams.

But it is such a smart move. Peterson, having recovered from severe back problems, gives the Eagles four starting-caliber cornerbacks. And when you are lining up against teams capable of spreading you out with quality receivers -- teams like Washington, Carolina, Indianapolis and Dallas -- you need all the cover people you can find.

So instead of using Joselio Hanson -- and this is no slap at Hanson, who has played well -- the Eagles can use the talents and versatlity of James, who is a good-to-very good cornerback when he is on his game.

With James, Lito Sheppard, Sheldon Brown and Roderick Hood, the Eagles have as good a foursome as you will find anywhere.

It works.

Going out and getting James is a credit to Andy Reid and Tom Heckert and Joe Banner and Jeffrey Lurie. I like the vision. I like thinking outside the box like this.

Now, the Eagles released Dexter Wynn, a good guy and a promising player. Wynn was waived in the preseason and then came back during the regular season and he showed a spark and a new tempo for a couple of weeks. That juice faded, though, and Wynn was inactive on Sunday against Jacksonville.

So the Eagles have some answers to provide in the return game, too. Is Reno Mahe the answer as a kickoff return man? Certainly, the Eagles have to get something going. They don't have a "pure" return man on the roster, and it could be that Hood goes back to the kickoff job. He is expected to be very close to, if not at, 100 percent for November 12 against Washington.

Mahe is a capable punt returner. If the Eagles really need a boost in the punt game, they can put Brian Westbrook or Sheppard back to break a game open.

More on that next week when John Harbaugh sifts through his options and the players available to him on the game-day roster.

Hey, color me optimistic. I know the Eagles are 4-4 and have some ground to cover. The focus, as Andy Reid says over and over, is to beat Washington. When he is asked whether the Eagles are a "playoff team," he bristles.

"We need a win first," says Reid.

James helps the Eagles win. It's a no-risk signing that could pay big, big dividends in the immediate future. I like it a lot, and it shows me again the way the Eagles think. They're always thinking, always looking for ways to improve. The Eagles don't hit home runs every time, but, well, I like the whole setup here. I think James is going to add to the mix as the team prepares for the taterskins.

Reid should be shteincanned for keeping Mahe on the roster alone.

Mahe wouldn't make an Arena League team.

if its a no risk signing.....and they got a guy who is a starting nfl cornerback who is going to help immediately then why is it such a visionary outside the box signing....

I really like signings that can pay big, big dividends in the immediate future of guys that don't even know the defensive scheme. It's really neat. We should get some more.

This is one of those signings that the guy will show just enough to get another deal with a team after the season and move on to have a Pro Bowl career.
