this tv commercial war over the "soda tax" is getting ridiculous. I see no good coming out of this. I know the idea behind the tax but I don't believe it will work. the ones that can already go beyond the city limits for their smokes, and they'll do the same with items that will fall under this tax.

why ? its going to hurt small business owners, particularly in the inner city, and within two years the program(s) its supposed to support will be in disarray because philly city council and the school board are both jokes.

its the lazy way to raise the funds instead of dealing with the real issues plaguing the school district.

it's not going to hurt anyone especially small business...that's like when the pubs said the aca would tank the economy

problem with the tax i have is that it's being promoted by many of the people trying to pass it as a public health tax when in reality they just want more money

that said I hope it passes as well

if you want your gross fatty foods and drinks you can pay extra for it

drink water or juice.
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Three cents an ounce is farging outlandishly stupid and it's a hideously regressive tax that disproportionately affects the poor.

It needs to be spent correctly and smartly by the city, so whether that happens remains to be seen. And I agree with igy it's a money grab for the most part. But if appropriated correctly it would be a big help.

But yeah if you want to drink soda pay the piper. One thing I've noticed in other countries is how much more expensive fast food and soda is compared to normal food and drink. You wanna go out and eat fast food it's going to cost you more than it would to buy some baked chicken or whatever.

Munson

It's a win-win no matter what, IMO....any funds from soda purchases will go to pre-K, and the truth is taxes like this almost always result in less consumption of the product, which is a huge positive.

But yeah overall, sales taxes in general are regressive and I'd prefer raises in income and/or ohter taxes to fund pre-K

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Will the glorified chocolate shakes at Starbucks that contain five times as many calories and are regularly purchased by the yuppie type of people who push soda taxes also be taxed, or is this just an arbitrary tax on one form of calories mostly consumed by poor people?

Susquehanna Birder

I hate the hypocrisy of using taxes to try and regulate people's actions. The government profits from the very behavior that it claims it's trying to curb.

the notion that a soda that used to be 50 cents but now is going to be 80 cents is going to put poor people out on the street is ludicrous...cigarette taxes did no such thing and they were far bigger

and at least this tax is going to directly fund education and community outreach...three cents an ounce is nothing compared to getting your kid in pre k or your neighborhood getting a new rec center....even if this tax doesn't cause one single person to quit or cut down on sugary drinks (and it will) the community benefits alone are worth it

Because new tax revenues are always spent exactly how they are intended.
