So about Corey Simon....

from Lenny P

QuoteIt hasn't yet developed into a case of all-out buyer's remorse but, when it comes to defensive tackle Corey Simon, some doubts are beginning to creep in about the Indianapolis Colts' decision in the summer of 2005 to sign him to a five-year, $30 million contract shortly after the Philadelphia Eagles cut him free.

The thinking at the time was that Simon, who had missed all of training camp, would provide the undersized Colts the kind of wide-bodied run-stuffer the club did not have on its roster. Simon reported overweight and out of shape, however, and, while he played well in spurts, collected just 41 tackles, didn't have a single sack, and clearly wasn't the difference-maker many anticipated he might be in the Indianapolis one-gap scheme. This year, after quietly undergoing arthroscopic left knee surgery in August, the six-year veteran hasn't returned to practice yet, much less played in a game, and he will sit out Sunday's key matchup against Jacksonville.

Simon is said to have dealt, at least somewhat, with the weight issues he brought with him to Indianapolis in 2005, but one has to wonder now if his conditioning is suffering again from inactivity. The Colts gave Simon $13 million in guarantees and, by the end of this season, will have invested about $16 million in him. His base salary for 2006 is $2.5 million, but then it escalates to $3.55 million in 2007 and $5 million each in 2008 and 2009. That's nearly $14 million in those years and, if Simon doesn't get back on the field soon and produce, the Colts might want to reconsider whether he is worth that kind of money. ESPN.com was among those that lauded the addition of Simon in 2005. Now we're beginning to wonder about it and, more important, so are a few people in the Colts' organization

But...but...he was the reason our D suffered last season. Maybe it's just ESPN and their lousy reporting, but who in their right minds would have ever thought of Corey as a 'run stuffing' type DT? A good pass rushing DT? Yes. A guy who can collapse a pocket and open things up for the rest of the D-line? Yes. A run stuffing D? No. He was adequate against the run and thats being somewhat generous.

Even though they made the right decision by not keeping him in 2005, they made the wrong one by first franchising him and then hoping to get a trade or hoping he'd play... so they were stuck with less depth at DT than they'd planned AND they didn't even get a compensatory pick when he signed elsewhere.  Just a complete botch-job thru and thru.

yes, damn him for trying to get as much money as possible in an unfair system!  damn him!
I'm the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood.

I don't fault him for that.  I fault him for allowing himself to become a fat piece of shtein every off-season, thereby slowing eroding any effectiveness or value he offered to the team he wanted money from.

If you want to get paid, you gotta earn it.  Worked for Westbrook, worked for Jamaal Jackson, worked for Shawn Andrews.
Anyone but Reid.

I don't think anyone here had a problem with him trying to get more money.  Here's what I (and I'm guessing most everyone else) had a problem with.

1.  He was overweight and out of shape.
2.  His performance on the field was clearly a result of his poor conditioning.
3.  He wanted to be paid for services he obviously wasn't providing.
4.  He was under contract and didn't show up to work.

I absolutely hate it when players hold out during camp/preseason/reg season because they aren't happy with the contract they signed.  Every player in the NFL has a right to ask for more money, just like any one of us has a right to ask our employer for a raise.  Well, except me.  I can't ask the guvment for a raise.  But I digress.....
Players can ask for more money all they want.  But if they don't get it they still need to report to work on time and ready to go.  I don't care if it's someone like Hines Ward who deserved to get a lot more money than he was making.  You got a contract, you show up to work.

That's why I'm glad to see Simon failing.  I'm glad because he acted like a douchebag here and he's acting like a douchebag there.  Too bad Indy gave him so much guaranteed money because I'm sure the extra coin in his pocket is really making it easier to deal with the fact that he's not out there playing.

yes, damn him for trying to get as much money as possible while not managing to keep his fat ass in shape to justify earning a penny more than he was making in an unfair system!  damn him!

I agree...
