It's just some dude saying that The Pacific should be boycotted because Tom Hanks made some vaguely hippy-ish remarks comparing racial issues of WWII to the current war on terror wars.
Is rjs gonna have to choke a bitch?

Basically, it's a rant about Tom Hanks.

Boycott 'The Pacific?'

Is the new miniseries The Pacific worth a watch, given the idiocy of producer Tom Hanks? In case you missed it, Hanks recently had this to say about his new World War II project:

"From the outset, we wanted to make people wonder how our troops can re-enter society in the first place," Hanks says. "How could they just pick up their lives and get on with the rest of us? Back in World War II, we viewed the Japanese as 'yellow, slant-eyed dogs' that believed in different gods. They were out to kill us because our way of living was different. We, in turn, wanted to annihilate them because they were different. Does that sound familiar, by any chance, to what's going on today?"

Unbelievable, huh? He's conveniently ignored the fact that they attacked us, they they often fought to the last man, refusing to surrender, that they often butchered prisoners or used them as slave labor. But somehow, we're racists for fighting back. Funny how that works, isn't it? And his comparison to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is equally insulting. We're just going around the world, killing people because they're different than us. Huh. I wonder how our troops feel about that analysis.

Hanks is obviously preaching to the choir, playing up to his radical Liberal nutjob Hollywood friends who share his distorted and selective view of history, but does that deliberate ignorance translate to his current project is the question. Is it possible that, despite his absurd views, Hanks can deliver a Marine Corps version of Band of Brothers?

I had been looking forward to The Pacific, but I confess that it's lost its appeal for me. I refuse to support the Tom Hanks/Matt Damon/Sean Penn crowd that insult and berate our soldiers at every turn, yet make millions with their war-related films. The Marines who served in the Pacific fought and bled for the freedom we enjoy today. I intend to exercise that freedom and pass on Mr. Hanks most recent project.

Yeah, Hanks is a tool, but he attacks the intent and motivation of the war, rather than the individuals fighting in it. He definitely holds the soldiers in great esteem, rather than berating them. Anyway, I've enjoyed The Pacific so far (especially since my father served on that side of the world).

BTW...Hanks apparently doesn't understand the history of prewar propaganda.

I just dont get it, people try so hard to find a "Agenda" on shows and everything out there, just sit back and enjoy for once nancy

i don't see it either.  in wwII there was a ton of hatred towards japanese.  so much that the us actually moved japanese americans into their own little camps.  it's not like americans were just showing hatred towards the japanese leadership and military.  they were hating on anyone of japanese decent.

and it's really no different today either.  go ahead and ask the average grunt what he thinks about muslims or anyone from the middle east.....not the taliban, not terrorists....just anyone from the entire region or anyone who claims to be a muslim.  he'll tell you that we should nuke the shtein out of all of them.

the only difference in how muslims/middle easterners are treated today vs how the japanese were treated during wwII is that we haven't locked up all of the muslims in this country.  i bet we would though if it wouldn't absolutely cripple the taxi and convenience store industries.

i guess i was actually better off not being able to read that article because there is a whole lot of stupid packed into a few short paragraphs.

Susquehanna Birder

When a country goes to war, there is a ramping up of propaganda, demonizing the enemy. In WWII, the hatred against the Japanese was certainly racially inspired. But it has to be considered in the context of the times.

Sarge, the difference is that Japan was following a political ideology, where the muslim situation is about a religious position.

Seabiscuit36

ah, the Japanese were looked at completely different from the Germans.  The Germans weren't as savage, and didnt wage war the dirty way that the Imperial Army and Navy did.  The Japanese soldiers had no code other than to kill the enemy at all costs.  Whether it be by strapping grenades to themselves, setting traps, and the worst cases of mass torture against soldiers.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

And that is why Lost is awesome.
