Rome

Leftovers was great.

Band of Brothers wasn't a series.  It was a mini-series and it was without competition in terms of greatness for that genre.

The Wire is obviously the undisputed GOAT in terms of true tv series.  The first two seasons of The Sopranos is on a similar level.

band of brothers doesnt count...ive never heard of succession and game of thrones cant be taken seriously...im not even saying its top 5 but its better than those three

its not as good as deadwood wire sopranos for sure...i cant remember all their shows so i dont know if there is two more that are better

Todd recommend Succession in this thread so I'm surprised you never heard of it but it's right up your alley.

You might not like the GOT genre but a show that's won this many awards deserves to be taken seriously. Remove the dragons and shtein and the story and characters are still as good as any of the shows mentioned. Last season blew but so did the Wire's.

is sex and the city really that much bigger than entourage??

yes...entourage had a few moments in the sun but by and large it was not accepted by polite society. SATC was a cultural icon of a show, had 2 movies and now a reboot series. everyone at hbo wants to pretend entourage never happened.

ask any white woman 30-50 and theyll tell you they watch SATC
Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

The show was massively popular, won a ton of awards and was universally praised but shouldn't be taken seriously. Got it.

I don't even think people who watched entourage think it was a good show.  it was really just made for pop culture cameos.

The Leftovers would be in my top 5 HBO shows. Possibly in my top 5 shows period. Just an incredible ride that got better with every season (though the best episode was clearly in Season 2).

But in terms of acclaim and quality and all that, my top 5 HBO shows would be some combo of Sopranos, The Wire, Game of Thrones, The Leftovers, Curb, and Succession. If I tried to eliminate all bias, I assume Sex and the City, Boardwalk Empire, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, etc are also up there. Can't penalize Deadwood for not lasting long when The Leftovers was only 3 seasons. I'm also still enjoying Westworld tbh, which I didn't think I would

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Arli$$ not getting any love?

Rome was pretty good. Got kinda weird when the money ran out and they compressed so many years into the last season though.

I'm still watching Westworld but it's pretty bad TV. Show had a lot of potential but took it in crap directions.

Game of Thrones was on trajectory to be a top 5 HBO show for me (and not a genre I would typically watch), but after Season 4 it went to shtein. Basically when the show went from dialogue and plots written by an actual writer (GRRM) to the two clowns who were showrunning it.

Season 5 was the worst season of the Wire, but was still better than just about any season of any show not named the Wire. Game of Thrones got legitimately bad, like network TV bad.

one of your worst takes...i lasted 5 episodes on it and couldnt stand the fantasy stuff but its unequivocally one of the best shows of its era even though the final season was evidently horrible

its not my thing or yours but that doesnt mean its not good

I wouldn't go that harsh on seasons 5-7 of GoT. 5 had the worst storyline of the show with what it did to Dorne, but every other storyline that season was pretty strong and had a few of the better episodes of the show. 6 was a return  to form IMO but also benefitted from getting a lot of happy payoffs and reunions after 5 seasons of mostly bad things happening to the fan favorite characters lol. 7 was okay, they just sped shtein up waaaay too fast so they could end. It basically turned into blockbuster movie instead of well paced TV drama.

Agreed Westworld probably doesn't belong there, but I have found myself strangely intrigued by where they've taken the series with season 3. But shtein definitely got a bit...weird at the end of season 1 and then again at season 2s end.

I have legitimately never even heard of the Leftovers but I need a new show so will check it out.  I somehow have also never seen one episode of Curb either, hundreds of clips over the years but never actually watched an episode.

Mine would be Sopranos, Wire, GOT, Succession and really that's it.

Also Succession has surpassed Wire for best intro music.

General_Failure

Guys, the top five HBO shows are easy to figure out.

Game of Thrones
Mr Show
Dream On
Perversions of Science
Babar

The man. The myth. The legend.
