Enjoying a Game With a Few Fans
Friday, June 16, 2006; E04

When I got back from Leipzig on Wednesday night, I went to the Fan Fest at the Potsdamer Platz in downtown Berlin to join the masses for the Germany-Poland game on the big screens. It was a mob scene, the scale of which I have never before seen.

Some were estimating upward of 800,000 people jamming into the area, and by 9 p.m., when I got there, the security lines alone were huge. The walk from the train station was surreal. It was a police state, with all streets and entrances to the highway closed, hordes of people walking to the Fan Fest all headed down one big street, and everything else desolate.

I turned off the main way for a while and it was like one of those early scenes in "28 Days Later," when there's just trash in these huge abandoned downtown London streets, and lots of police vehicles. When I reached the park, I immediately realized there was no way I would ever find my friends, so I looked for a bar. All the pubs I found were packed and you couldn't see the game, so I ended up watching with some street vendors, and a group of Mexicans and Scots on a tiny television set up next to a sausage stand.

We had a good time, and that was quite a second half. We all agreed that Germany would end up winning it late, but we banked on Miroslav Klose with his head from three yards out off a corner kick or set piece. We weren't dead on, but not far off, either.

My friends watching in the Fan Fest said everyone went nuts when the 22-year-old David Odonkor came into the game; I guess he's becoming quite popular. The kid has amazing pace and served some great balls, as well. What a setup on the goal, too. Germany with a late winner -- some things never change. But with Germany and even Italy pushing the attack, could world football be taking a more pleasant turn?

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

Talk about 1970's porn star look.

Saw him play for the Cosmos when Hawaii had a team in the NASL back in 1976.  He was actually a very cool guy.  A bunch of us were sitting behind his goal in the second half and when they had the game well in hand he was talking to us and actually came over after the game to say hi.   Ah, the good old days when pro athletes weren't a bunch  iceholes.

Iran giving Portugal all they can handle in the 1st half.

Rome

Portugal poured it on in the second half.

The penalty kick goal was farging bullcrap.  The dude from Portugal barely got touched but since it happened inside the box, they called a penalty kick.

Retarded.   ::)

Rome

Ghana is beating the Czech's 1-0 with 73:00 gone.

It should be about 3-0 right now.

:o

Ghana wins. A US win (1-1 34 min mark) would put all teams even at 3 pts.

And Italy is down a man (one of their idiots got a red card for an elbow that drew blood).  Another Italian has a yellow.
