I heard Pete Seeger sing it earlier than that.

Funny, but no, MLK did not say that.

Actually, he did.  Not the lyrics, of course, but the actual words were the theme of this speech.  I think this was his last speech in Memphis.

Sure but long long before that the song was in wide use among labor unions and other social protestors.  He also said, "please pass the salt" and lots of other things too, but we don't attribute those phrases to him because he didn't originate them.

OK, fair enough.

I'd murder pretty much every one if you iceholes to get to any of the Riot Fests going on.

THawk, no idea what music you like, but on Saturday I assume you'll be seeing the Wu when they're on. If for some reason you're not, I'd pick Dashboard over The Get Up Kids personally but that's because I went through my teen years with Dashboard. Get Up Kids are a little less whiney vocally, but still pop punk.

Unless you're a fan of The National, check out Taking Back Sunday. They were the free show at Xfinity Live! last Thursday for the Eagles party that I wanted to go. The singer's voice is shredded after smoking for years, but they're still pretty energetic. The National is a band everyone tells me I should love but I haven't really been able to get into them.

Earlier in the day, I'd probably pick seeinn Say Anything, but the Bosstones and Me First and the Gimmie Gimmie's are close seconds.

On Sunday, early in the day...everyone tells me I should get into Bouncing Souls and The Front Bottoms. Bouncing Souls have obviously been around for a while, Front Bottoms are newer. Naked Raygun is up against Motion City Soundtrack...if you're not a Raygun fan, check them out, another decent pop punk outfit. La Dispute is the other band on at that time, I know some of my students listen to them but that's it.

Tegan and Sara are up against Mineral...if you were into the first wave of 'emo' in the 90's, go see Mineral. Tegan and Sara are good though. They'll probably play more of their newer stuff which is more on the dance-pop/indy side of things. Their older stuff is more indy/3rd wave emo. I enjoyed their show at Firefly.

I would choose New Found Glory over Cheap Trick and Social Distortion, but, that's me. I'd have no idea what the farg to do between The Cure and Weezer....I'd probably choose The Cure since I've never seen them and just saw Weezer, but Weezer's set is probably gonna be exactly what you think it'll be. Every big song they've ever had and one or two of the other songs popular with their fan base (like El Scorcho). Bring Me The Horizon is some sort of metalcore/scremo type band, can't see choosing them over either The Cure or Weezer. But, maybe you're into that.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

I was actually into Bring Me the Horizon when they were heavy as farg. It was badass as hell and hilarious. Then they turned into Hoydas.

Diomedes

farging Hoyda.

Dude doesn't deserve this much filter.

i'm currently living in Austin...been to ACL the last 3 days and have seen some good shtein. Outkast friday night, Eminem yesterday, Pearl Jam tonight. all 3 were really good.  my first PJ show and they did not disappoint.

somehow got sucked into iggy azalea show yesterday and i think she's a complete joke but it was farging fun.

also, band i've been following for like a year now, best new current shtein is a band called chromeo. they killed it again today.

Mmrbq

Halestorm was good, hung out with them back stage for a bit. Really cool peops. Lzzy Hale is hot as shtein.

Breaking Benjamin...wasn't real familiar with their music but recognized their popular songs. They weren't bad at all. Towards the end of their set they said "this ones for the Empire"...went into March of the Imperials from Star Wars then into Schism from TOOL then into Smells like Teen Spirit from Nirvana and finished it off with Walk by Pantera...incredible montage

Saw STP with Weiland at the mmrbq in 2010 and they were great...now they have Chester Bennington who is Linkin Parks lead singer as their front man. I can honestly say it was the worst show I've ever seen. Just farging dreadful. Some bands like Alice in Chains don't miss a beat going from Staley to Duvall. Not the case here.

Susquehanna Birder

Last Sunday I hit up Zappa Plays Zappa at Rams Head Live. Good show. Dweezil's current tour included a complete rendition of Frank's album, One Size Fits All. Damned good music, performed with love and care by Dweezil and band.

Thursday was the Dear Jerry freak fest at Merriweather. A ridiculous number of artists - including former Dead members - jammed into 4 hours. It could have been 6 hours easily, as a couple of bands got bumped when they ran out of time. Regardless, it was an experience of a lifetime.

Rome

I know quite a few people who agree with SD's assessment of STP with that screeching douchebag from Linkin Park.   What a total farging disgrace.

I love the comments I've read from the band members, though.  Oh, things are soooooo much better without Scott Weiland.  Chester is such a better singer.  Blah, blah, blah.  Give me a break.

SD

Weiland's a train wreck of a person so I get moving on from him...I mean just watch this from a few weeks ago, they said he wasn't on drugs that he was just tired

But his vocals are incredible, he has a perfect amount of bass in his voice for his genre of music. Bennington just doesn't work on any level. I actually sat for the last portion of their show. Couldn't wait for them to finish.

Rome

The first time I saw STP was at a free show here in Daytona during MTV spring break back in the early 90's.  Yeah, they were a Pearl Jam/Nirvana ripoff and their music was about as middle of the road as it got for "alternative," but Scott Weiland just lit up the stage, even as farged up as he was back then.   He made that band just as David Lee Roth made Van Halen and Ozzy Osborne made Black Sabbath.  You can slot other guys in the lead singer spot but that doesn't make them adequate replacements.  It's a one in a million thing when the replacement guys exceed the original.

Breaking Benjamin was actually out of the game for maybe 5 years. This must be their first tour back

Some big ass brawls at the wxtu concert in Camden. I guess fights happen every year at this event but there were more all out brawls. Bunch of redneck animals. Scroll down for the videos
