I don't know any mexican carpenters.  Plenty of landscapers, painters, drywallers, roofers.  Carpentry, not so much.

Ever hear the jokes about Mexicans hanging out in Home Depot parking lots?  They ain't doing it because they want to mow your lawn but because they want to build you a deck or fix your roof.

they do that in the northeast as well and they are all laborers who help do everything from lanscaping to roofing to carpentry but i wouldnt call them carpenters

that said i agree with the overall idea that there are many latin american carpenters and many more of them in areas that have larger latin american populations

this is science

Maybe not so much in the North East.....the part of the country farthest away from the US/Mexico border.  But in the SW border states....SoCal, AZ, NM and Tayhas, Mexican laborers are Jack of all Trade-type folks.  Ever hear the jokes about Mexicans hanging out in Home Depot parking lots?  They ain't doing it because they want to mow your lawn but because they want to build you a deck or fix your roof.

Besides, Mexicans love Jesus and he was a carpenter so it only makes sense, right?

As for the content of the show itself, I couldn't say but the basic premise seems to promote the stereotype.

He's a legally employed worker who helps people out. I don't see that as a negative stereotype. Like you mentioned, it's the reality of the situation. Now, if they had him as some fence jumper who did odd jobs for people then yeah I'd see a problem.

Handy Manny builds and fixes shtein, he doesn't mow lawns and pull weeds. His motto is "you break it, we fix it". He also owns his own shop, he's more whitey than whitey.

Zero hour, Michael. It's the end of the line. I'm the firstborn. I'm sick of playing second fiddle. I'm always third in line for everything. I'm tired of finishing fourth. Being the fifth wheel. There are six things I'm mad about, and I'm taking over.

LOL @ fence jumper.

Legal or illegal doesn't really matter though, I'm just pointing out the Mexican/Carpenter stereotype.  It's no different than if they made a show featuring a black character who solves problems with his athletic abilities.

Like I said, I've never seen the show and it could be a good show.  Just seems a bit stereotypical to me.

And speaking of stereotypes, I've been meaning to post this for a couple of weeks but keep forgetting.  I saw some (fairly) new sitcom called Mike and Molly a couple weeks ago that's about 2 fat people falling in love or eating a lot or something.  Anyway, this Mike dude is a Chicago cop and his partner is a black dude who lives at home with his grandmother.  As if that stereotype wasn't bad enough, the grandmother is the epitome of stereotypes when it comes to old(er) black women.  She's a bit hefty, very preachy and doesn't really talk, but sort of sings everything she says.  The only thing they left out was mentioning how she spent her life as working as kitchen help for some uppity rich white people.  Or maybe they did cover it in a previous episode.  Anyway, it's pretty bad.

If the sky is clear where you are I highly recommend you check out the so-called supermoon right now.

Holy shtein it's amazing.   I used a pair of cheap binoculars to look at it and I can't recall ever seeing it appear bigger or brighter.
