Officers who've succeeded in getting promoted make some pretty goddamn decent money according to that chart.

PS: The "make room!" and "retire!" comments were funny as hell.

I can tell you it was pretty farging cold last winter, and we got 6 feet of snow.

Abbott is just down the street from Great Lakes.
Anyone but Reid.

You work at Abbott Labs?

That is funny.  And keep in mind that those charts only reflect base pay, which is the only portion of pay that is taxed.  For those who are married or are authorized to live off base, they also recieve their monthly housing allowance (based on cost of living for the local area) and roughly $292.00/month for groceries.  Then there's also special duty pay for recruiters, drill instructors, linquists, sea duty, hazardous duty, jump pay, flight pay, etc, etc, etc and none of that is taxed either.

That's why I'm an E-6 at 14 years of service and can afford to live a pretty comfy lifestyle.  It ain't because of the $3100 a month they pay me.  It's because of the extra tax free pay that I make each month that almost equals my base pay.

I'm hoping he can get a degree and make more money in four years when he gets out. According to the recruiter, you can take as many college courses as you want or have time for.

SD, I've heard from the recruiter, but mabey you can tell me what training and job skills will go with a 'internal communication electrician?

Not entirely true or false.

Yes, he can take as many courses as he wants.

No, he cannot take as many college courses as he wants.

The military offers almost unlimited education opportunities through correspondence and online courses that are free and usually set up by each particular branch.  Many of these courses do give some college credit but the amount varies from course to course.

As for tuition assistance, the Navy will pay 100% of his (part-time) college tuition but there's a limit on how much money they will spend on it per year.

QuoteThe maximum amount paid for tuition assistance: 100% Tuition and Fees

Not to exceed:

$250 @ Semester Credit Hour, or
$166 @ Quarter Credit Hour, and
16 Semester Hours (24 Quarter Hours)@ Fiscal Year

Here's a link that gives you some pretty good info about how it all works.

Also, if you google "navy tuition assistance policy" you'll get hits on some other pretty informative articles as well as actual policy letters from the Navy concerning tuition assistance.

Unless your kid devotes all of his free time to college and is willing to take on some of the cost out of his own paycheck, I seriously doubt that he would be able to recieve a 4yr degree.  Also, tuition assistance is ultimately at the discretion of his commanding officer and if the CO dictates that an upcoming mission will interfere with college (or vice versa) then he/she may dissapprove your son's request for TA.

Check this out.....gives a pretty detailed description of what he'll be doing and at the bottom of the page, it lists what civilian occupations he could transition into.

I see through this  link that the US and Canada job descriptions are about the same.

I also found this interesting. what the recruiter didn't tell you

I was told, by the recruiter again, that IC's work directly with Verizon and Comcast. That sounds like it could open some job opportunities.

tell your kid to watch his cornhole.

I don't think he has to worry much. He's 17, 6'2" and still growing. He still works out every day at the high school. He benches 300lb. in a very controlled lifting environment. I imagine he'll just get bigger and stronger in the Navy than he would anywere else.
