This is what I don't get about this whole religion pissing match y'all are having;

This country was founded with freedom in mind. We're all free to do as we please (for the most part). That includes practicing whatever religion we want to. So if Dio and others like him want to flaunt their atheism, fine. If Tony Dungy and others like him want to give thanks to God, fine. I have no problem with anyone of any religion. It is their right to practice as such. And it is their right to say as they please too.

I believe in God. I was raised Catholic and while I do not practice Catholicism now, I still believe in God. I believe in some of the Catholic teachings and disagree with many. Just like in politics, I look at each side of the debate or argument first before seeing how I feel.

While I do not like the people who are in-your-face about God and Jesus, I don't let them bother me because that is what they are allowed to do. I don't need someone trying to convert me. And I don't let the agnostics bother me either. That is their right. The people who really get me are the ones who (mostly prisoners) who get all hyped up on religion when they get locked up. They try to appeal to the public by flaunting the bible and God and things like that. And shame on the people who buy their crap (not saying some aren't truthful, but most of it is a ruse) and equal shame on them for using religion as a crutch.

I just don't understand the fury that is directed towards both sides by one another. Let each group be who they are. That is the way it is supposed to be.

Why should you get it...you enjoy the overwhelming majority and the support of every major institution in this country.  You weren't made to recite atheist dogma in school.  You aren't subjected to constant propaganda from an atheist society.

There's nothing for you to get.  It's all good.

I understand the anger from both sides. I don't particularly care, but I understand it.

We live in a society that has been molded by christianity.
We also live in a society that was designed from the beginning to avoid being molded by ANY religion.

This causes a strong conflict of feelings from both sides of the fence. On one side you have people who put a high priority on their beliefs and who look around and see others who look like them and act like them and believe what they believe, then they look at the dollar bill and it says 'In God We Trust' and then they say the national anthem and it says 'Under God' and then they go to their local courthouse and see the Ten Commandments on the wall and it strengthens their 'faith' and they don't understand why others don't believe. So they get obnoxious about their beliefs.

On the other side you have people who put a high priority on the founding words of the country and when they look around all they see are references to religion implicit in so many aspects of our country and they don't understand how a country founded on the idea of separation of church and state can support and encourage that kind of behavior. So they get obnoxious about their lack of belief.

Personally, I don't have a problem with religious people. It's not for me, but who cares. If it gives someone strength where they previously had none, good for them. What bothers me is the official role that religion plays in this country. From laws to politics to education religion drives the way this country is taught to think BY ITS GOVERNMENT. It's illegal and has been illegal since the very first second of the country's existence.

And if I was it wouldn't bother me. Just like being inundated with Christian talk doesn't bother me because I choose not to listen to it.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just trying to figure out why so much anger.

I was an Atheist for a majority of my life, I'm now a Christian...and I'm not here to preach. I refuse to go to Church or include myself in any organized religion, as I think they're corrupt and serve as a crutch for the weak. The "I'm better than you because I believe" group is no different than the ultra rich with their nose in the air. Athletes and coaches like Dungy who say "I did it Gods way" are even worse, as they think that God gives two shteins how he won the SuperBowl. Also people with their fake personas when they're in a religous setting make me sick.

you left out the part about being able to be free FROM religion as well

its not a matter of just going to church praying and going home...or believing when you die you do nothing but rot in a casket six feet down

the idea of god permeates into so much of society rather than be kept in the church and home....in fact its stressed fervently passionately...and what does that lead to?

war
hatred
murder
genocide
rape
women as chattel
female genital mutilation
repression
terrorism

the constiitution i was born under ensures a seperation of church and state and this is much more important than the right to practice whatever religion you choose
i can take a phrase thats rarely heard...flip it....now its a daily word

igy gettin it done like warrick

im the board pharmacist....always one step above yous

Agreed 100%. I believe that the gov't shouldn't be so reliant upon religion in how they do business. The founders rolled outta Europe to avoid the religion so it should be free here. Worship who you want but don't make it part of the state.

It's about as legitimate as Shawn Kemp's offspring.
