My guess is he'll get reassigned but will never command a vessel again. The Navy has a lot of guys in line to command ships who haven't crashed them into stuff and killed people. In the years I spent dealing with the Navy and observing various fargups, it always seemed like they had the least amount of tolerance for collisions. I doubt they would court-martial him since he was sleeping (unless they find something egregious), but it's a possibility for others involved if they are found to be negligent enough.

The investigation should be interesting, I'm sure it's already underway. I was on the first boat to the Cole the day after the terrorist attack (I served aboard the Tarawa). We took a crew of around 30 people with us assist the crew. The investigating team arrived shortly after.

Officers are rarely subject to punishment. They're usually forced to resign or retire if they have enough time.

When I was on Facebook I used to post a pic of myself on the Reagan with a bald Commander. He was awarding me my ESWS pin (enlisted surface warfare specialist). He's one of the officers involved in the Fat Leonard scandal. I was aboard the Reagan when they were doing all this shady shtein. Trial in that scandal is about to get underway.

I usually didn't like my job, but at no point did I think it would be better to actually be in the service. Especially when I was aboard ships and subs as a civilian nuke. Hats off to SD, because most of those jobs looked terrible.

I don't know the exact circumstances but the flooding of one berthing compartment isn't enough to sink a ship. It's a big area but every space you go on a DDG has a water tight door. The forward berthing only has a water tight door that leads to a stairwell where there's a hatch leading to the main deck of the interior of the hull and a hatch leading below decks that I think lead down to sonar (it's been 20 years).

My best guess is those Sailors were killed by the impact of the collision. The berthing is "literally" next to the ocean. You can hear the waves crashing into the hull while you're sleeping. The only thing separating those sailors from that cargo vessel was a sheet of steel.
