anyone have any experience w out-of-state speeding tickets? my sister works in ny, lives in nj, and got a ticket this morning for doing 80 in a 50. she's one of these people who thinks she can get out of anything so im kind of glad this happened to her, but thats beside the point. does anyone know if points transfer from the state where the ticket was given to the state where one is licensed? i got a ticket on the schookill once and it never showed up on my nj abstract, but im not sure how it works with ny to nj.

ice grillin you

unless its changed new jersey does recognize tickets obtained in nys

one thing in her favor is that nj used to only slap you with two pts regardless of how fast you were going or how many pts your ticket would be worth in new york or nj...

if what you posted is actually what she got then her ticket is worth 6 pts in ny and 5 in jersey but she will only garner 2 if the jersey system is the same as ive always known it to be

My understanding is that it depends on the state that issued the ticket and that some states are "non-reporting" states.  I got a speeding ticket in VA while I was living in MO.....something like 75 in a 60.  Obviously I'm not going to fight it from halfway across the country, so I paid it.  VA never reported it since I paid on time and my insurance company never raised my rates and I had no points added to my license.  This was probably 10 years ago though, so it's possible things have changed.

thats what ive heard from the few people ive spoken to today - that the 2 points will transfer. the same thing happened to me on the same road that she got clipped on (staten island expy) but i never got the points - long time ago though.

federal law requires all states to report the violation....its up to your home state as to how they want to handle it...ie nj slapping a generic 2 pts on you for out of state tickets whereas maryland for example doesnt penalize you for out of state tickets

Ok, so I had it backwards then.  I knew it was something along those lines though where some states would penalize you for out of state infractions and others wouldn't.

ice grillin you

you actually had it right if you are talking ten years ago

i want to say the law went into effect fiveish years ago...prior to that individual states had the option to report a violation or not

I just found out the first one night I ever had got hit by a car last May and died. I feel kind of bad, but also have so many self-disparaging jokes I want to make. So I figured I'd post it here and let you guys make them so that I'm not the horrible person.

perhaps you could explain sd's reasons for "disliking" it as well since you seem to be so in tune with other peoples minds

Oh fun, I'll start....are you sure she didn't jump in front of the car once she woke up next to you?
